Preparativos para o Cona - Preparations for the Cona

In some forums, it is common to ask if any Wing Chun practitioner has ever aided their SiFu in any demonstration, be it public, or at the school itself. Anyway, I've had the opportunity to work with SiFu in this aspect in a rather unusual way, in the absence of a better term, helping him demonstrate Wing Chun system techniques for a UFC professional, which earned me One of the best experiences on humility in the martial art I ever had. This was a truly unique experience, but based on the work profile of my SiFu and the Brazilian Wing Chun Academy, his school.And because of this bold profile of transmission and teaching of the Wing Chun system in the traditional molds and for its work of differentiated quality, SiFu was invited to participate in the Cona - Online martial arts congress - as a speaker. For this, in addition to his own lecture, SiFu will present videos that were recorded at the Headquarters school in Salvador to illustrate technical examples and give an idea of what our day-to-day life is like ...

And what was my surprise when SiFu asked me to produce videos here at Recife's core school and assists him in his lecture, even online !! Then, last week, we intensified the training and started shooting the '' drills / trials '' so we could do a good job.The problem is that I always get very insecure with public demonstrations for the simple fact that people have the common idea that Wing Chun is almost like Tai Chi; Smooth, simple and non-stressful; Ledo deceived !! Particularly when I see someone arguing in some forum and defending the idea of '' martial science '' ... '' simple and effective art '', '' quick, efficient and deadly style '' ... and things like, I laugh, but not at the intention of disqualifying this type of opinion, but because if you are a guy who is minimally clever, you may even learn some system concepts fast, however REFINING and reaching technical accuracy is extremely difficult !! And it's not easy to present it to audiences, whether in video or in any form.

In the same way - and here I open a parenthesis on the subject - when I put some technical material here in my Blog and some idiot comes try to level us down, debate or even say that we are wrong in a light and pedantic way, I I simply understand it only as weak people who want to draw attention to themselves over the work of others. Nothing more pitiful !! I am not talking about negative criticism or technical differences. A criticism, even a negative one, can be very useful if you know how to think about it. The technical differences vary from family to family Wing Chun and one who has a restrictive view on the subject, misses the opportunity to grow and explore potentialities. So much so that I was never restricted to speaking, interviewing and publishing texts or matters of masters of other lineages here in my Blog.
 Yes, I'm talking about some people who have an obsession with trying to somehow denigrate our work and the work of SiFu for free. A tree that does not bear fruit receives no stone, as the saying goes. I do not need to convince anyone that I am right, in my opinion I am right and do not feel anxious to be in the media and not even the desperation for public attention has gotten me in the head!

(Meu estudante mais avançado, Eduardo me auxiliando a demonstrar técnicas)
(My most advanced student, Eduardo helping me demonstrate techniques)

Quite the opposite! If today our school obtains notoriety and respect in the national and international martial arts community, it is not defaming anyone, much less buying franchises as some do there (people that obviously do not mention names so that they do not come to grow their wings on top of my views !) But our success comes from continued hard work, driven by the hardest training yet! Every day, incessantly! That's the truth!

With the help of my training friends and students, we are doing our best to do our best, with the guidance of SiFu and my Kung Fu brothers in Salvador to produce these little videos and make our contribution. Our small contribution actually ... And this is a huge pride for us, because we are a small school here in Recife, but we are a school committed to improving Always!This video below, is a little preview of our training for the recordings of these videos and has been really hard to produce!

Stories of a Mo Gun; Dido meets a UFC fighter!

We were in Salvador, was December and a huge heat hindered and our performance. However, my Si Hing Joao Gilberto, despite anything, offered to do the checking my basic on the first day of training, a Sunday and was all ok. Physical training proceeded normally and my performance was very good! Obviously this was due to the fact that I have prepared me all last year before returning to town.
Then we follow the days and nights of intense training in rhythm; more than 10 hours of direct training with a few short breaks for lunch, dinner and a slight break in these intervals.
SiFu in late afternoon, stoped for a moment and tell me;

- '' If all goes well, we will go to the square of Pituba train a little outdoor ... ''
- '' Cool SiFu, the heat is killing ...!

Enfim...

Like everything went well in the mogun and SiFu had seen and solved some issues of personal, it helped us to be. I do not remember exactly but I think we took a taxi and only in the back, took a bus. Anyway ...

We arrived the square of Pituba, a well-wooded place with gymnastics equipment and a very busy night. People practicing walking, playing ball, running with their dogs on the lawn ... In the heat, I think people in Salvador are half restless and is not for less ... With a heat like that, impossible to be quiet.
All kinds, began warming doing some isometric exercises in the fixed bar and from there, we went to a bakery, buy some juices and water; Yes, I was close with hydration and not allow other renal crisis in the middle of my training, I was earning very well.

Numa das pausas, o telefone de SiFu toca;

Then we went to a more open field and start to practice some fighting drills ... SiFu was me explaining the strategy, the concepts of movement, which are the best times to apply them and we were seeing all this in practice. I remember exactly what was and not dwell too much, do not I will detail here. But when we were training, I started not easy to SiFu in exchange of blows to train this coverage, and SiFu also not facilitated for me ... We repeat the movements for God knows how long ....

- ''Hugo?''

- ''È,  Hugo 'Wolverine' Vianna...do UFC...''
- ''Ah...legal...''
Eu disse isso mas me lembro que pensei exatamente assim;

''Caraca!Vou conhecer um lutador profissional do UFC!''

- '' It is the Leonardo Chamusca ... just a minute ... Dido '

Leonardo Chamusca is coach of top athletes and fighting professionals. Well known in Salvador and a guy who SiFu has the highest esteem.

- '' Hey old, so you there? I'm here in Pituba with my student who came from Recife ... Man, I'll see if I go back to school .... No, no .... think better come? Beauty, then come ... We are here in the square Pituba same ... ''

- '' Come on then? Has anyone else with him SiFu? ''

- It is old, Leonardo're her school with Hugo ... ''

- '' Hugo? '

- '' It is Hugo 'Wolverine' Vianna ... UFC ... ''

- ''Ah cool...''

I said it but I remember thinking just like that;

'' Wow! I will know a professional UFC fighter! ''

Until then, I had little idea how a professional UFC fighter and who had participated in the TUF (The Ultimate Fighting) could use some principle of Wing Chun system in your game. I mean I had any idea because SiFu already trains top fighters for some time and Hugo, along with Everton Teixeira (world champion K1) were already in this work with SiFu and SiFu always spoke of this work with Hugo. ... but I had never seen IN LOCO how it was done. And of course it has a difference. I had some preconceived ideas about you as a professional wrestler behaves and everything, but I had one of the greatest lessons of martial art I have ever had to date ...

While they did not arrive, we continue our training. They followed the techniques of the second system level I was learning and we trained as hard as we could. We were yielding very good and SiFu always warned me to when I return to Recife, do not neglect these techniques.

Em determinado momento, fomos interrompidos;
At one point, we were interrupted;

- ''E ai Marcão!''
 Eram o Leonardo Chamusca e o Hugo.

- '' Hello Marcao '' It was Leonardo Chamusca and Hugo.

After an effusive hug and made the necessary introductions, we started talking about the UFC's backstage, on the techniques themselves, the work SiFu been doing with Hugo and some stories of Wing Chun in Salvador, as Leonardo is a practitioner Wing Chun very old. I listened more than he spoke and being there was not much to add ... I was among the great!

Em dado momento, SiFu falava sobre Chai Gurk e Chaang Gurk, duas energias de chutes do sistema Wing Chun que fazem parte do que chamamos de Kui Noi Gurk - ''Chutes abaixo da saia'', ou dos famigerados ''8 chutes do Wing Chun'' e se dirigindo ao Hugo, falou algo como;

At one point, SiFu talked about Chai Gurk and Chaang Gurk, two energies of the Wing Chun system kicks that are part of what we call Kui Noi Gurk - '' Chutes below the skirt '', or the infamous '' 8 kicks of Wing Chun '' and addressing the Hugo spoke something like;
- '' This kind of kick has some details and some small differences in energy and application. One of the most important points is to remain covered while kicking ... You can do it like this (shows movement) or so ... (showing the movement that was apparently the same, but not exactly the same) ... . '

- '' Ah I understand Marcao, you mean like that ... (It makes the very same movements with the same energy) '. And so ... '' (also just as SiFu did) !!!

That impressed on! SiFu had given me some ideas of how that was shot and I had spent the entire day trying to 'get' this technique, without much success. Hugo only observed SiFu do twice and learned time!

- '' That there Hugo. But there are also some sequences of two and three times that you can do ... Dido, put there the forearm protectors and gloves ... ''

And I was there putting training gloves and forearm protectors. While SiFu spoke to Hugo about Ganh Sau against side kicks and how you '' back '' with some other coverage, in this case, Pak Dar to catch the opponent on the back foot movement ...
So I started sending without warning, punch combos and kick SiFu and he did exactly the technique. Then he sent to me without letting me know which side, if high or low the same combo so I could also train the technique. I do not remember being hit, even SiFu wants to beat me, but that's the least of it ... Man, a thousand devils! The Pak Sau of SiFu started BREAKING my forearm protector guard and his slap began to hitting directly in my arm! How was the '' warm-blooded '' did not care at the time, but only began to hurt after ... The next day, when I was practicing the form Chum Kiu, my arms were shaking and I could not control; Result of Shock of  SiFu's Pak Sau in my radial nerve ...

But that night, occasionally, my gloves and undid my leggings loosened. I used 3 leggings tied to be able to withstand the bombing SiFu and every time I kicked him, it was as if kicked a column of edge, almost kind of like Tong Po was in the Van Damme's movies know? The difference was that really hurt !!
And when I tried to tie, with great difficulty, Hugo was willing and came to help me ...
- '' Wait man, let me tie here ... ''

- '' Thank you! '' Said I coyly ...
The second and third time SiFu kicked in the head and he put his Ganh Sau embedded and explosion, my leggings released. Hugo bent down to tie ...

- '' The SiFu beats very hard is not? (laughs)''

- '' Well , He beats very hard(laughs) .. Thank you .. ''
And so we went for two or three rounds of technical reps to SiFu to print the idea that he wanted to spend ...

No caminho, tomamos um ônibus para o bairro do Mo Gun e antes , paramos um pouco no famoso Acarajé da Dinha...aliás, acho que era um bar antes do dela, mas nas mesmas mediações. Sentamos e pedimos uma cerveja e comer alguma coisa, além de jogar algum papo fora, como de costume. Enquanto esperávamos a cerveja, SiFu falou;

Just then, Leonardo and Hugo said goodbye and followed the way back. SiFu combined with them something after my return back to Recife, it would take a few days still ahead. Soon, we would be putting our equipment to follow home. The training day was findado.On the way, we took a bus to the Mo Gun neighborhood and before we stopped a little in the famous Acarajé Dinha ... in fact, I think it was a bar before her, but in the same mediations. We sat down and ordered a beer and something to eat, and play some talk out, as usual. While we waited beer, SiFu spoke;- '' Did you notice what Hugo did today? ''- ''No...''Answer immediately because I was still thinking with how he learned those shots so quickly ...- '' Old man, he gave him a lesson in humility and respect. The guy's a professional wrestler. However, he bent down and tied his shinguard without any problem. He volunteered all the time to help you. That's the kind of attitude that shows how much fighting spirit he has! Not everyone would do it ... ''

Fiquei calado até que as cervejas chegassem. Antes de dar o primeiro gole, esperando por SiFu, falei algo como;

SiFu deu um meio sorriso e dando um gole na cerveja gelada disse;

- ''Esquente não. Amanhã teremos outro dia de trabalho...''

I was thinking about it a few minutes in silence while staring SiFu a busy night on the main avenue, waiting for your beer ...I was silent until the beers arrived. Before you take the first sip, waiting for SiFu I said something like;
- '' SiFu, today was a historic day ... I'll take it with me for life. I am happy to be here with you experiencing this ... ''
SiFu gave a half smile and taking a sip of cold beer said;
- '' Do not worry. Tomorrow will be another day of work ... ''

Usually I do not like to comment on videos from other families in the large clan which is the Wing Chun (Ving Tsun), referring as a whole. Because I believe that there is no single method that is actually the epitome of the system. I do believe that there are students of Yip Man who are still alive, those who focus on the system at a certain point and they are good enough to transmit it - their understanding of art - competently. So, discuss differences between families, whether they are right or wrong, does not make much difference ...

The case is that some people possibly ask me to evaluate footage and interestingly the last week I was asked to give an opinion on a video of a guy here in my little land. I honestly do not give a damn ... If it's a friendly person, I say how much the person is cool or how we talk or not, without giving further technical explanations. If  the guy on the video is not my friend or i do not know, I prefer to speak absolutely nothing, not enter the case if the guy can be good or not. For me, it does not change anything at all and in fact, do not judge me able to observe and critique technical errors - other than my own

Moreover, I am learning a very important thing; The Mo Lam (and even beyond), anything - absolutely anything - a practitioner can do or say, will have serious consequences that often are not even perceived, or that may not directly affect you, but will affect other people. Also I will do not give names on this case,  by a simple matter of ethics ..
However, this time I think that abound, videos of Wing Chun system demonstrations can stroll between the actual, real and a bad joke and ridiculous. Yes, unfortunately, the latter are most ...

How often you dear reader, watched a video on youtube any, showing a '' Real Fight '' with a practitioner of Wing Chun and the face of Wing Chun loses the fight - or even win, but anything convincingly - and below is a flurry of comments like; - '' This is not the real wing chun! '', '' This is not the authentic Wing Chun !! '', or, 'This wing chun is modified ...' 'and blah blah blah .. ..This is a fairly common phenomenon ... is the kind of argument used mainly by those who try to make your wing chun stands out, either commercially, technically, etc, etc ...

Para podermos ter um norte, é necessário estabelecermos alguns pontos importantes;

The point is that - apart from the fact that these guys always overvalue their styles without even being aware of how the other martial arts works, because we really believe that their style is the '' last cookie package '' and excluding YipMan, they think taht they are ''fighting gods'' - without training that is facing the reality, for 'the real thing' ', no - I repeat - NO fighting style will be effective. It's that simple! But there comes a question; What is the reality, in terms of combat?

In order to have a north, it is necessary to establish some important points;

1) While martial art, we can distinguish the Chinese martial arts in two very basic ways; demonstrative arts and applied arts.

a) - demonstrative Arts may be those whose elaborate movements difficult to perform attract the audience for his show and plasticity. The training is very, very hard, however, their original techniques have little or no applicability in situations where an opponent will attack with full force, full speed and with non-classical attacks. The school usually brags about his marvelous deeds and has wide range of commercial power and conviction.

b) - Since the applied arts is its inverse; They are martial arts that does not have much - if any - plastic beauty, with equally difficult training, but their movements are highly strategic applicability in combat. Its principles and concepts are meant to fight, not for entertainment. A school of applied art that deals with what is' real fight '' in fact, never use it as marketing banner ... that because the person who practices it, its teachers and students are fully self-sufficient in terms of safety technique and need not boast of anything. Silent work!

2) While some advocate the idea that the real fight is the one where your life really is under imminent threat and rare are the times when a person finds himself in a kind of situation like this - working their coping techniques under the 'symbolic action' '(a term that very misunderstood and used pejoratively as' pretend to fight, '' by some people who do not quite understand the real meaning of the term) at the other end we have other teachers, instructors and / or teachers who say - the proper proportions - a fight in a competitive environment as the UFC, K1 and the like, can get too close to something more '' realistic '', as the brutality and the way the fight goes on - with few safety rules for the competitors - is similar to what would be a real confrontation ... training this case has nothing to do with the discussion.

Perhaps the most sensible is not lean toward either extreme. The case is that it has been proven by many examples in practice that a sports training can not be fully effective when placed in a real attack situation. A real example was the death of a fighter of mixed fights, shot down with a hell of a whack on the head of an aggressor that he did not notice the approach when facing a group of people with your partner (see here the matter;http://g1.globo.com/sc/santa-catarina/noticia/2013/07/lutadores-de-mma-se-envolvem-em-briga-em-posto-de-gasolina-veja-video.html) ... And training for an uncontrolled environment (if, in this case in particular, there could be one), you may need to be adapted to function properly in a competitive environment. Those who followed the interview with my Sibaakgung Larry Saccoia, may have a idea what he tells you about it ... and I agree with him completely!

The case is a coping situation in uncontrolled environment has large variations. Not all gives to put on paper or give to simulate. Elements such as the local culture, the historical moment, the predominance of forms of combat that are practiced and more ''N'' conditions is going to say what is the reality for that environment to that state, country, etc, etc ...

In this case, fully agree with what SiFu always speaks; - '' A really efficient martial art bases its strategy to anticipate, avoid confrontation and to have a preventive attitude If you have to react A risk situation, presupposes that his martial art and its position as a strategist already failed! ''

We learned this the hard way with the death, a few years ago, my Si-Hing Eduardo ... But when it comes to practice martial arts, what I mean - briefly - it is; How one fight in Spain is completely different from the way someone struggle in China, Brazil or Zimbabwe ... and so on.

What amazes me most is that many former practitioners of the art do not realize it and often when they train with a teacher come from outside, it has a great experience in struggle and everything else, even if they learn really interesting techniques, do not end taking this into consideration and believe that the epitome of divine technique is centralized. And what happens is that in a fight, whatever the subject passes embarrassment and turns joke ... and think that some even fight!

And it gives me a strange feeling to see that many people think that Wing Chun is' cat fight '' ... as a friend spoke pejoratively practicing Hapkido in a post on a social network ... Obviously, as I do not joke with art from anyone, I am extremely offended when they make jokes of mine ... but the fact is that the joke often makes sense!

Acho que já até mencionei aqui uma frase bastante usual em nossa escola sede em salvador que utilizamos justamente pra abordar esse assunto - ''Na prática, a teoria é outra parceiro!'' E é isso ai mesmo!Mas, mesmo assim, de toda a sorte, eu lhe faço uma pergunta amigo leitor;

The real thing in martial art is; You can learn a curriculum from A to Z of any martial art it is, but without experience against someone really willing will '' take your head off '' - as they say in popular jargon - that is, someone who will get hit (! !!) you will not get far ...
And since you always try to fight in environments that allow a body will face body, professional manner and to allow the full use of his ability as a fighter and strategist, invariably you end up learning some lessons that will not always be in school. And until you get will get away - if lucky - a real risk, you invariably, you will think thoww times about their concepts ...You have to make your art work within the conditions in which he lives and not within the conditions that others think can serve.

I think I've to mention here a very usual phrase in our school based in Salvador,  who just used to address this issue - ''! Man, In practice, the theory is another! '' And that right there But even so, all luck, I ask you a question dear reader;

What kind of Wing Chun you train?

I question it not for you that are probably reading these ordinary lines and is already practicing a serious school. But the mountains of boys and young men who will arrive by chance this site and are practicing or on their own, or youtube videos, or even alone .... Yes, there are still people who prefer this way ...

Not to mention those who believe that being formed or advanced in any other styles, whatever they may be - such as Northern Shaolin, grab Water, Drunken Bonxing ... or whatever it is - can have understanding of what Wing Chun is not never had a formal lesson on the subject.

With the new franchise about Yip Man - the continuation, in this case - with Donnie Yen once again it is likely that the phenomenon of appearing a new Wing Chun master will each corner can happen again ... and there in these conditions even Michael Jackson if a hipotetic way,was alive, it would be a practitioner of Wing Chun ...

(Isso seria um Yee Jii Kim Yeung Mah preparando para um Moonwalker???)
(That would be a Yee Ji Kim Yeung Mah preparing for a Moonwalker ???)

As Sitaaigung Duncan Leung often already said ... No matter who learned from whom, in fact. Whether you can take down an opponent with his Wing Chun.
Only to knock his opponent it takes a lot more than we do believe enough to do it. No matter how talented or how strong someone appears to be. Apply Wing Chun in fact, it will always demand more from you. Will require minimal understanding of how to properly train. To know the when, the how, the where, the '' why do '' and especially the '' why NOT do ', technical and art in sí ... and that you can only learn from a case can competent teacher ... it will also require you to take a chance and go try to find out if a technique is really effective for you or not ....

A sparring at your school - with some kung fu brother - it can even be hard, violent ... the effect of K.O. can be frustrating, difficult ... with physical and emotional distress, but still, BE VERY FAR from what the martial art meant in the past, or that a risk eminent require .... maybe it will be close YOUR reality or not ... you feel that way? How would you react to that?

SiFu  always tells me between one chat and another that; - '' Martial arts are nothing but answers to certain problems in the fight, to influence social, historical and cultural center of its region of origin. Study it and you will be able to understand any martial art ... ''

But do you want some advice? Forget the mainstream around the wing chun, my friend! Forget the blah blah blah mystic behind all the nonsense about philosophy, chi, secret curriculum and everything else ... forget the nonsense of secret technique, the biggest crap; to train with the intergalactic badass Master seminars that cost the guy in the eye to tell you a couple of stories and you get out of there with a paper in his hands thinking that is Chinese .... Forget all that! NOTHING, absolutely nothing will ensure that what you are learning is actually martial art!

Learning culture is cool and very very important, the thinking behind the move and everything, the historical roots but the reality of what combat is quite another ..... the truth is neither in these ordinary lines of this blog ... Want to know what is actually martial art? Go fight someone and find out for yourself! Look for the root ... while you continue to emulate combat experiences of a third - is your SiFu his Sihing his Sidai ... or anyone else, you will not get the essence of what the martial art is proposed. Perhaps, in this process, it would be relevant even readjust to the question; - 'For what you train martial arts?'
