Especial ; Sigung Li Hon Ki

This post today is really special. It is homage to the one who was undoubtedly one of the most important names for Kung Fu in Brazil was what it is today; a consolidated art as one of the strongest in the whole Latin America. We will talk a little about my Sigung, Li Hon Ki, official introducer of styles Wing Chun and Hung Kuen in Brazil, who died in the last 02, leaving a huge kung fu family, a huge kung fu family and the legacy of a legend.

We will do well to simply because try as we might honor the memory of such an important person, and this blog being so rough as it is, with complete certainty, we will not be paying tribute to the height it deserves. But I try to do my best here. So, I invite you, dear reader will memorar the course of this it was a true icon for Chinese martial arts in Latin América.

Eu me perguntava '' Como não havia percebido tal relevância antes?''.

I begin, however, saying that during the last week, several schools have posted their condolences and pay their respects will this which was a legend of kung fu in Brazil. With his death, leaves the scene the man and the myth arises!

I admit shamefully that he had no real idea of the importance that my Sigung has and how much he is respected. I use the present tense because his name is still respected and will always be respected, as I have noticed in the last few days. The night I received the news of his death, my phone has not stopped ringing!
I received calls even from other countries, such as U.S., Greece and Hong Kong, the community wing chun national and international, all dismayed by his sudden departure.

I wondered 'How did not realize such relevance before?' '. I mean, we all knew of his great contribution to the Chinese traditional martial arts (AMTC), but I really did not expect so many people around the world could feel both.

Teachers from other schools and other styles of kung fu honored him with beautiful and concise texts, messages and videos over the Internet. But perhaps the most significant tributes have been those that just appeared in the said '' mainstream media '' but were heart. For example; Selective for the world of Tai Chi made a minute of silence before starting their activities during this weekend in Sao Paulo. Already our school, both at Headquarters school in Salvador as our core Recife closed for 3 days. There was ceremony before SiFu reopen the school and here in Recife, made a special training, dedicated to his memory, also starting with a short speech.

Several other kung fu schools in several states of Brazil also paid respect and mourning for Master Kay, as it was also known. Record here our thanks and a special thanks to Mark Antony Shifu Seschi and Shifu Nelson, who lost a loved Si Hing recently.

So this post is more than special, to honor and respect the memory of one who was responsible for the spread of Chinese martial arts and oriental therapies in Brazil and Latin America, not regretting his death, but note his achievements, recalling her figure which according to SiFu, it was a private person who just appeared, but while transiting between a person in a good mood; Sometimes too quiet, sometimes good conversationalist, but always a figure very dear ... and the coolest; With a kung fu of the strongest ever seen! I think he would approve to be reminded so ....

He served as assistant instructor of his school in Virginia Beach is a life member of Duncan Leung Wing Chun Academy.

Sigung Li Hon Ki said that he had found '' the answers to your questions '' to become a disciple Duncan Leung.

Li Hon Ki in recent years worked, albeit quietly in their families Kung Fu Wing Chun and Hung Gar. And not only; She continued acting in Tai Chi, in Chinese medicine and other areas of activity. Showing a strong spirit, as ever, it continued its activities until the end, not withdrawing from all of the activities, as customarily happens to teachers who have a great longevity in the martial arts, but he continued acting while facing an illness. He worked continuously for Kung Fu.

Last year, Sigung Li Hon Ki made a visit to SiFu at their school in Salvador, where he talked for long hours with SiFu and could closely monitor how it was being done and the work of the Brazilian Wing Chun Academy. SiFu account that was a special moment, because even having completed the whole system with Sigung and this giving formal authorization for SiFu continue their studies with other members of the international family, going in 2009 to China with his blessing, SiFu had a great esteem , as it should be.

 Meu Si-Dai Fábio postou em meu facebook uma estória bem engraçada de um jovem que estava fazendo tratamento com SiGung para parar de fumar e ao terminar a sua sessão, SiGung puxa um cigarro e começa a fumar...questionado pelo seu paciente , a resposta espirituosa de SiGung foi;

As a student of your family, I feel somewhat frustrated for not having known him personally. One of the times that Sigung was scheduled visit will Savior, I tried everything to travel coinciding dates so he could find it and could not. But occasionally, during my workouts, SiFu always told me a story about his accomplishments, or some more funny story, and I always noticed a respect and a very great admiration in the words of SiFu.

  My Si-Dai Fabio posted on my facebook a very funny story of a young man who was being treated with Sigung to stop smoking and to end your session, Sigung pulls a cigarette and starts smoking ... asked by his patient, witty response was Sigung;

- '' Who wants to quit smoking is you, not I ... ''

Upon reaching this point in the article, I think that could extend me for another 5 or 6 paragraphs, but I think we could end here. This is because a great man, with so many stories and an undoubted legacy as was Sigung Li Hon Ki, is difficult to put into a simple text like this and believe, others also can not succeed. I confess I do not know how to finish this article and believe that many who have written about him in recent weeks also felt this way. But one thing is certain; His legacy will continue as strong as it was in life.

Sigung, rest in Peace.

Eu não pratico Wing Chun!

I do not practice Wing Chun!

''You do not wing chun! ''

'' This is your  wing chun is different ... You wear boxing gloves !! this is not Wing Chun !! ''

'' His Wing Chun is mixed with what other art? You mix with Thay Box! ''

'' His Wing Chun is not real wing chun ... I've never seen Wing Chun like that! ''

Since I started practicing Wing Chun with my SiFu, Marcos de Abreu, I have heard that, especially in recent times due to the growing popularity here Blog and other adverse issues that prefer not to comment and has no relevance. The case is that many of these 'misunderstandings'' about this , is really about our Headquarters school in Salvador and table in our core here in Recife are common and often, whenever I hear of a new student or someone newcomer to school that 'this style of wing chun is different than seen before ...' ', this at least.

Let's look at the case superficially ... What makes Wing Chun, be '' Wing Chun '' and because what I've been learning would not Wing Chun?

Starting from common ideas ... The initial idea of Wing Chun in general is quite simple; How to take down your opponent with minimum effort and maximum efficiency. The problem is that your opponent is bigger, faster, more experienced, has what we call 'hard chin' 'and does not fall so easy. And then, what do you do?

Prestando atenção no outro.

Without wanting to give ready answers, but not fight force with force might be the most obvious. Fighting intelligence refers the idea of the 'feminization of war' 'and reminds us exactly the legendary origin of the system created by a woman, act strategically and not by brute force. Watching the other. So you will need to enhance their scams using inherent principles of the system for power generation, always playing the hardest part for him hit ... that is, you should be smart and avoid the strengths of the opponent while avoiding it knock you on your weaknesses, for example.

So you will not get the idea of free trade blows with him, or to measure forces with him. Even So; Not fight '' force with force '! It is not a matter of winning the fight convincingly, but a question of what you are smaller and weaker than his opponent, then, if you try to exchanging blows, it shall cease to be a minimally balanced fight and becomes a contest of '' who beat stronger, wins! '' And then, the disadvantage by these parameters, it is all yours, enjoy!

And if you stand still, you will get hit and knock down! Another basic principle which says Wing Chun is that it is a defensive art; Why, it was for the jargon; The best defense is attack! If you stand still waiting for the opponent's attack,  you will get a hit! That's sure. You have to always keep yourself one movement ahead of the opponent, for it must be anticipated, cover - which is always the priority - and hit at the same time ... which leads you ....

... Wing Chun is simultaneous attack and defense ... Ok! Exactly. Defend and attack at the same time is a basic premise. The problem is that in real, not always you will have the ballast of time required for it ... you'll have to be patient and often will only take the time to defend, at best. Besides the obvious difference between cover and blocking, you should always keep in mind that should decrease the time between the plan and execute it. Or otherwise, this will not help anything. Fight is something that happens quickly, very fast. Break the rhythm of the opponent is important, but that you do not get all the time and not the time you think you can keep this ... but when you do and you have a chance, you can not hesitate!

It is also said that a premise of Wing Chun is the economy of movement. But what is economy of motion? Just use strainght blows ? Short movements?
Maybe economy of movement was a concept for '' less wasted movements for less chance of error. '' Save movements means not waste the chance to use deception to succeed in an investee. If I can make a move to make the opponent do what I expect, and it does and falls into my trap being set, it was an economic movement. And this has nothing to do with the use of hooks and uppercuts ... yes, there in Wing Chun!

Use the best tool for the right service, it is one of the basic principles of Wing Chun. No use trying to solve a simple question with elaborate movements, eloquent and only take time ... A simple problem, a simple resolution. For example; If someone grabs your wrist, you could even try to grab the opponent's arm with his free hand, take 3 steps back diagonally, while trying to sit at the base and ... bam, it would take another punch! I think Bruce Lee gave an example of this, with a similar situation in one of his videos .... But back to the point, in this case, there are many unnecessary movements! The simplest and most effective tool would attack with a straight punch, simple, with his free hand. Nothing more! With this I mean that in a free combat situation, if the use of a typical knee of Muay Thay is necessary, or Werstling projection, a halter, so use it, if the situation calls for! The tool itself does not matter as much as the method used to apply it. There are jostling with the shoulder in the forms of Wing Chun, but if you need to use a push, the concept will be '' Wing Chun ''.

E o método utilizado basicamente parte do pressuposto do que chamamos ''Simplicidade''. Outra característica do Wing Chun.

And the method basically assumes what we call '' Simplicity '. Another feature of Wing Chun. Being simple does not mean acting in rough shape, gross or anything, for everything. It does not mean '' poverty ''. Simplicity may be the most logical and rational way to act within a context, or how to evaluate an action before it occurs and act evaluating the best possibilities.

I have seen many people saying that in Wing Chun you should '' control the center line ''. To close the center of the body is not exclusive of Wing Chun, much less something that only exists in Chinese arts. I explained here as in the case of a free combat, what we call the '' Center line'', it is in constant transition and this, to be '' controlled '', as we imagine it should be, is far more complicated or practically ineffective. In fact, you can interpret this '' control the center line '' as '' always remain in the shortest distance between your gun and the target will be achieved ''. Keep the shortest distance will require to be always with a good sense of distance and timing, which is the highest skill in combat. This was most aptly explained in the same theme post, right here  in blog

Those are only some of the principles that underlie the system wing chun and you might think; - ''hey man, All you saying here it exists in others martial arts! '' And I say; - 'Yes, of course there is!'

But what makes, at least in my opinion the Wing Chun as '' Wing Chun '' is that it is not, nor is it a matter of '' way '' from '' look '' with what other guys do or do not do, or 'follow the master' '. It is a question of 'what works best!' '' 'Find your way to do what you have to do.' ' The '' his '' right way may not be the 'right way' to work for someone else. Why there are so many different Wing Chun in the world ... because if my SiFu teaches me and I have the exact same drive, like him, it means that i'm only imitate him. It is not a matter of learning content and be playing it. I have to be smart and cunning enough to know what to do with that content that my SiFu teaches me the time I need. So I see Anderson Silva, for example, cornered in an octagon corner, using random movements, which may not be exactly perfect, but at least it prevent being hit with some minimal feature that has been mentioned so far, so I think ; - '' It is Wing Chun! ''

 Comentando uma vez com meu SiHing Lucas, falávamos entre um papo e outro, certa vez que ;

(SiHing Lucas and me, on the Salvador's Mo Gwun)

Sacaram a diferença?

Commenting with my Sihing Lucas, in a informal conversation, we come to a following conclusion;

 - '' When it comes to street fighting, fighting and everything else about real right... Often you will not solve anything just using your hands. A firearm is the simplest way to resolve an issue .... so is Wing Chun! ''

Now... we use in our training boxing gloves and protectors and, oh man, this matter has been discussed so ... you have no idea! understand; If you do a workout of some fighting drill without equipment after the twentieth repetition, you will be with your arms and legs and finished full of bruises. This is not an accident happens before ... with the equipment, you train 100 times the same techniques with a minimum percentage of an accident and the possibility of continuing to practice without wearing either not to hurt either ....

We also use something that many will find that it is a heresy; dirty tricks! Yes...Of course, for what they call 'real fight' '- and not in a competitive environment, with rules - you have to be rascal .... have to be very smart, old man! You have to know '' play in the rule '', but also '' break the rule ''. You can not give advantage for your opponent ... and I'm not talking about  'finger in the eye,' 'nor' 'kick in the groin' ... this is something for amateurs! I am talking about creating chances and know no fool to be deceived! See the difference? basic principle of '' Art of War '', or not? And repairing well, it is exactly what said my countryman, a singer called Bezerra da Silva; - '' Trickster is trickster and loser is a loser! '

If i will evaluate all this and many other aspects that let out here - I mean that purposely - maybe some guys are right; I do not Wing Chun. But surely full of what I speak, the art will which workout suits me just for what I think is my goal as a practitioner and the most important thing is not to win every battle, but have the opportunity, strength and fighting spirit to rise again after a fall .... and no matter how you call it ... Wing Chun, Ving Tsun, Wing Tzun, Tjun Wing, Wing Chuan ... matter that I can use art and express it in various fields my acting while participating individual in this world.

Blog do Dido recomenda: Unsettled Matters: The Life & Death of Bruce Lee
