O desafiante de Yip Man - The Yip Man's Challenger

While '' Yip Man 3 '', continuing saga known as '' The Grandmaster '' with Donnie Yen and (amazingly) Mike Tyson, don't have your premiere here in Brazil, and all the expectation surrounding the movie only increases (yes, half of the practitioners of wing chun in Brazil have seen sneak peeks of the film in recent weeks, including the fight scene between Donnie and Tyson), I remembered that there is an interesting account of Sitaaigung Duncan Leung about Yip Man faced a their challengers within their own school. Ie a classroom account of actual combat between Yip Man and challenging!
I reproduce here a translation mine - one rough so obviously - about this interesting story ...

                                                          O Desafiante de Yip Man
* Por Sitaaigung Duncan Leung

"Existiam estórias sobre os encontros marciais do SiFu, tanto em Foshan como em Hong Kong. Estes episódios tinham diferentes apelidos, tipo ;

                                                             The Yip Man's Challenger

* By Sitaaigung Duncan Leung

"There were stories about martial meetings of SiFu both in Foshan and Hong Kong These episodes had different nicknames, like,
-." Doubling the barrel of a gun "
- "Breaking wooden pillars with kicks."

However, Si Fu did not tell these stories, however neither denied nor acknowledged that had happened.
When the SiFu came to Hong Kong in 1949, he had been dismissed and appealed to teach Kung Fu. In those days the Wing Chun was not known in Hong Kong. To attract students at his academy, he had to disclose it.
There were numerous challengers. Those who had a real interest later end up becoming their students, but those who showed signs of contempt, invariably end up on the floor or in the hospital.

I witnessed an episode a few weeks after joining a gym (NT as a regular student), who later would become something common in my own schools. Four or five of us were training when a man with over thirty years came asking for SiFu. We thought he was one of the older brothers of Kung Fu, as the SiFu had many senior students who were older than us.
The Si Fu was taking his regular rest (after lunch) in the cubicle behind a curtain. An unusual aroma emanating from the place, different to that of cigarette smoke. Later we would discover that it was and end up used to that.
He must have heard our conversation with the man as he left the cubicle wearing wears white shirt and black pants. As he came close to the man he motioned for us to continue training. Their conversation did not take long. He turned around and told us to take a step to the side. Not knowing what was going on we went out there and we stood against the walls.

The Si Fu was 62, short stature and his weight was very light. He probably had an average height of one meter and fifty weighed 55 k he was shot down and stared blankly. His gait was upright same- and slightly tilted back, giving the impression that he was afraid to take a step foward. When he walked he became their heels firmly on the ground. I remember once he told Bruce Lee, in my presence, it was not good to walk with your heels off the ground, a way of walking unmistakable in Bruce Lee movies. I later learned to walk with heels unsteadily in ground implies a short lifetime.
Unfortunately the Si Fu was sure that's what he said. Bruce Lee died when he was only 33 years old.

With both hands behind your body, SiFu informally stood in his left foot. He raised his right leg until your right knee was above his waist and the sole of your right foot facing the challenger. He gave the impression that he would stamp the opponent with the sole of his right foot.

The challenger was much younger, taller and heavier. In fighting stance he was used to being, raised his arms closing his fists tightly and got ready to attack. Its base was low, and he raised his chest.  was Zhu Mantis (Zhu Jia Tang Lang) It was really impressive standing there like that.

Si Fu threatened to kick with his right foot and the young move forward quickly crossing his forearms and tried to block the shot of SiFu. He had intended to interfere with the right of SiFu leg and push down. Soon he would launch forward and would punch up with the intention of attacking the throat of SiFu. Before his fists could reach right leg of SiFu, SiFu stamped his right foot abruptly and heavily, avoiding punches challenging and simultaneously triggered his left foot to stamp your left sole chest of the opponent sending him against the wall. The young challenger fell and lay on the ground with blood gushing from his mouth. SiFu asked us to take you up to the street corner and he returned to his cubicle. ''

Novos videos de Yip Man 3 - New Videos From Yip Man 3

First of all, I would like to wish you all readers of  Dido's Blog a Happy New Year !!! That 2016 is full of struggles, achievements and victories for us all! :)

Those who follow the blog here already know I'm not one, but with both feet behind the new film starring Donnie Yen, for the continuation of the (now) trilogy '' Yip Man '', known in Brazil as' 'The Grandmaster' and therefore, have avoided the most comment on the film.

Posters and photos of filming were disclosed will exhaust the last month in own profile Donnie Yen in social networks and on your Facebook. I avoided the most comment on that, because to me, so far, the film that best portrays about what is being inside a Mo Lam and what I can call '' The great movie about martial arts the last five years '' The Grandmasters remains, Wong Kai War and the great ''The Final Fight; Yip Man'' as one of the best biographies ... but inevitably this would be an issue that sooner or later would have to speak here ....

When I first saw the announcement that Mike Tyson would participate in the film, I felt too weird! So my suspicions gave up down the drain, as in mid-November, a photo was published where Tyson appears with the broken finger, (for trying to punch for real!) Donnie during the filming of the fight scenes .. then ..Imaginei that the guys were not kidding ....

But then, a Facebook friend from another country released unpublished excerpts from the fight scene between Mike Tyson and Donnie Yen filmed on amateur camera inside the cinema ..... and my suspicions and mistrust returned with a vengeance, since all is well .... As would be ridiculous somewhat inelegant display these images here show the trailer, which is pretty cool.

I did not understand yet and Thai Boxers, Bruce Lee, Mike Tyson and Yip Man will be in the same script, but that by itself, already generates a certain curiosity, do you?

It was then announced that Bruce Lee would key role in the new plot, which made me have a good expectation ... until, here comes the scene and friends .... I will not take more comment .... once their own conclusions ....

We can only hope, really, what will come of this new movie ...

Wing Chun e o desenvolvimento estratégico

Wing Chun and strategic development

One of the things that is really fascinating in the Wing Chun system is its high logic and applicability in combat. Yes, we are studying an art that was originally structured to deal with an opponent in the form of body language in the context of hand-to-hand confrontation.
But for this, we must first understand the intrinsic logic of the system; Its theoretical and your way of thinking. Do not you wonder, Si Fu and my SibaakGungs always tell me it's no good just being good at fighting; For more talent you have, without understanding the concepts behind the moves, we can never successfully apply Wing Chun.

And once we have understood the system, we realized a new way of thinking; One way, say, '' more strategic '' to see the events around us. We spent will make rapid assessments, measure calculated risks and follow the trends of events and adapt will they, targeting both prepare for unforeseen, how to take advantage of situations or learn to negotiate purposes optimally and intelligently to achieve certain goal . This' strategic thinking '' becomes the way in which we can act more objectively, intelligently, etc, etc ...

O dicionário Aurélio define estratégia como sendo;

    1. 1.

But understanding the strategic thinking inherent in the Wing Chun system, at least for me, is at least as difficult as the physical training in sí. It is really something that requires an in-depth study of both the system derived from sí, as the different Chinese cultural forms ace which gave rise to the this kind of attitude.

But what is the strategy?
How do we define the strategy within the Wing Chun system learning process and as we move from the conceptual phase to extract it an applied behavior in our experience?

The dictionary defines strategy as;

1.
Art thou to coordinate the action of the military, political, economic and moral involved in conducting a conflict or to prepare the defense of a nation or community of nations.
2.
thousand of the military art that deals with the operations and movements of an army, until, on favorable terms, the presence of the enemy.
3.
p.ext. Art apply effectively the resources that they have or exploit the favorable conditions that may be enjoy in order to reach certain goals.
4.
p.ext. ingenious ruse; ruse, subterfuge.

or yet....

Strategy (the old στρατηγία Greek (STRATEGY) and meaning of "the art of leading a troop, command) [1] and designated the military commander at the time of Athenian democracy The Greek language has several variations, as strategicós, or himself. General chief; stratégema, or stratagem, ruse of war; stratia or military expedition; stráutema, or army in campaign; stratégion or stall general, among others.

We note that for those few definitions strategy, in general, is a quality leaders. Who yearns to be a good leader must have an obligation to understand about strategic forms of action. That explains a lot about why corporate employees seek strategic techniques to manage their business. But this is just one of the points ....

We know that as we are dealing with a martial art, this term shall require a more specific conceptualization. Which brings us then to '' Strategic thinking Chinese '' or '' Strategic thinking Chinese Classic ''. It is called '' classic '' because it is based on ancient Chinese classical writings and are inherent in the way of acting of the Chinese people since centuries ago. It's' 'new thing', so to speak ...

Perhaps the oldest work will on this subject is the book SUZ TZU BING FA ( pic.), or '' The Art of Sun Tzu War '', which according to written in the book of Si Fu '' Wing Chun Kung Fu: A martial art practiced by Bruce Lee '', bears similarities with strategically's own Wing Chun system. How to beat the opponent quickly and efficiently? How to win all the battles and challenges ?? Speculating here (and I'm probably wrong, since it is a much more ancient thought than I can measure), it may have been the kind of thinking that gave the '' start '' to develop resolutions and answers Smart conflicts, which was later applied in its most varied sphere of human activity.

What the classic Chinese strategic thinking teaches us is that often, the conditions for achieving victory does not depend only on internal factors but often external factors. A good positioning, good posture and good preparation can help in a battle, but often the environmental analysis of the conditions of time, space, energy, and failure (induced or natural) the opponent will we win. So it is said that '' The coup is only valid when the opponent allows. ''

When we begin to learn about the Wing Chun system, usually entered a systemic condition to first understand our own posture, positioning and how to train diligently, through the understanding of concepts, mies basic exercises, etc etc .... By train with a partner, we can through simple movements - at first - will answer simple movements of your opponent. The extent to which we experiencing and understanding better how we can develop more elaborate strategies, we will put in the same way, in more elaborate situations that will require of us also more elaborate responses.

In addition, we realized that more important than impose our own vision, will or desire, is to understand or perceive the position of the opponent or opponent. An analytical care It is necessary to observe their motivations, their movements, etc ... Once you have identified the trend, presentation and context of the situation, we anticipate it will. Act does not understand what happened physically, but are one or more of the conceivable variants, which are indicative of a setting in a given situation. At this, the Sinologists attribute the term 'non-action' '(Wu wei (Traditional Chinese: 無為 - Wuwei; simplified Chinese: 无为;).

You can even induce situations, in this process, but never force them. Force a situation demands too much energy, too much effort. The idea is just the opposite; act for the path of least effort for maximum result. The simple act does not necessarily mean the act simplistically, as the act does not require sophisticated way too complex actions. Si Fu gave an example of this when he spoke about '' non-action '' ...

(Si HIng João Gilberto e SiFu)
(Si-Hing João Gilberto and SiFu)

- '' This is an important fact to understand the way of thinking associated with the oriental martial arts. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence and planning can overcome a larger situation that his forces as long as they act at the base before it is too big. This is the same idea Taoist non-action, which has nothing to do with inactivity or passivity. Not to soil the street instead of investing too much time and money on brooms and sweepers, for example. ''

Act under such favorable perspective to the person a better understanding of the actions of others, and allows act assertively, obtaining time domain, saving actions and reaching goals efficiently. Therefore, it is extremely important attention on the other. The perception of the opponent and their motivations. Understand what your strengths and your weaknesses more and act within a stratagem that might prevent your strong side and exploit their weaknesses. Hence the aphorism; - '' Know your enemy and know yourself, fight 100 battles without losing any. '

Once you impose its unilateral vision and try to act, through its unique point of view for their own interests, ignoring what happens, it will produce a spending unnecessary actions and energy. But early action based on the reading of the trends of events can be considered the key piece for understanding the Wing Chun system. The only sustainable strategy is one that fits will change .... That is, we perceive there to be a strategist, within the concepts of Wing Chun system means to always be alert, watchful circumstances ace which we are involved, either in combat, is the professional relationship or within the family, so we can take full advantage of any potential downside.

The exercises and combat techniques in this case, work - obviously as fighting and self-defense skill practices - but also as examples and possibilities that can be applied in either circumstance struggle or confrontation, but as examples of attitudes can be incorporated will experience in its broadest sense. However, as important as training the ability to fight, is to understand that it is more effective to avoid a confrontation, avoid putting at imminent risk situations than having to act in a moment that his life may be in the hands of someone else, just as Si Fu said ...

'' If you get into a situation where you have to react, it means that its preventive attitude and your attitude as a strategist has failed! ''

How many of us have seen, giving an everyday example, someone walking down the street with cell phone in hand being approached by a thief and suddenly ... Bam! too late for a reaction ...? The non-action in this case, the person would not walk with your phone will show. It would be easier for her to call back at another time, or see that message that just arrived on another site other than the one ....

The Wing Chun system is only one of several ways to achieve mindfulness of the course of events and moldarmos as best they will, only through his diligent and disciplined practice.

Até a próxima
See you Later

This interview was already to have happened will over time, but due to lack of good standing with the Blog - among other things - had only now timely to edit the texts.
And it is with great honor that this month, our interviewee is prof. Augusto Carvalho.
Professor Augusto Carvalho is a well-known figure within the wing chun national communities and their dedication to art is really inspiring. In this conversation by e-mail, could I make some issues - some very controversial - where we can understand a little more about your vision and interpretation of the Wing Chun style and his current branch.

Well, without further ado, let the interview!

Blog Dido - Mr. tell us how was your first contact with the ving tsun? Mr. already practiced in other lineages and as Mr. met her current sifu?

Sifu Augusto - I am aware of Wing Chun through articles on Bruce Lee, published in the 1970s started the practice in 1993. I went through two different lines and a lot of research and experience with other practitioners to meet my sifu. I was introduced to Sam Hing Fai Chan, for my brothers Kung Fu, Nilson and Marcio. The Family Sam Chan began working in Brazil in 2008. Today, we have four Sifu in Brazil: Augusto, Yakko, and Marcio Nilson.
Briefly's it. What I can add is that my involvement with martial arts is not limited to Wing Chun. And my start was given in 1976. I went through various experiences until the present moment where I teach: Wing Chun, Jow Ga, Tai Chi Chuan. In addition to practicing karate (brown belt) and Jeet Kune Do.

Blog Dido - I wish Mr. comment on what are the main features both philosophical, as its current line techniques.

Sifu Augusto - My master used to say that we form good citizens. Then martial element is just a carrier therefor. The practice of exercise routines and interaction with Sifu, will lead to formation of good conduct for life. I teach how to deal with everyday conflicts beyond mere hand combat techniques the body.
When someone asks me, "teaches you to fight?" Or "your Wing Chun works in combat efficiently" I always answer with another question. I wonder why the person wants to learn how to fight? You are military, cop, security, etc. I make the person stop and think first, the reason for wanting to learn a martial art. What are your motivations. This first conversation is already a class.
In short, our lineage advocates a martial practice at a time without war, where the enemy is our ego (centrism). We must free ourselves from the desire of violence. The martial practice helps us to have discipline and master aggressiveness. We are in the 21st century and not in Brazil in revolutionary China of past centuries.
I am following the Sifu Sam Chan, following his Sifu Ip Ching, who learned from his father; Sifu Ip Kai Man. I'm trying to teach here in Brazil a family culture. Of people who have seen war and seek peace. Our Wing Chun is simple, straightforward and objective, as I like to point out ever ..
In MMA times, people confuse objectives. They think that everyone should be gladiators of the 21st century we have to understand that there is difference between martial art, self defense, combat sport, etc. Each branch has its specific purpose. And even within the same follow-up, you will find diverse proposals. For me, all are valid.
The martial art was created by humans for humans and not vice versa. So the most important is the human being.

Sifu Augusto Carvalho - Pergunta complexa.
Minha saída é me relacionar com quem pensa igual a mim.

Blog Dido - The Ving Tsun is an art traditionally transmitted through the kung fu families, or clans, being different in styles, where many of them self-claim
authentic, real, closest to the root, or original, etc, etc, causing a major disagreement between them. Mr. believes that there could be a 'unification' - so to speak
- Among these organizations is possible to reach a consensus in this regard and in your opinion, what are the main reasons why there is so much disagreement among families
ving tsun, there is a way out of this?

Sifu Augusto Carvalho - Question complex. Being objective, I believe the reason is selfish and do not see a way out of this impasse, at least for now.
But would like to make some comments here to expose my point of view the question.
Let's face it. Currently there are several types of Wing Chun. There, said traditionalists, the avant-garde, the mixed, the invented, and so on. Not all follow (as you said) traditions. This generates many glaring differences. And is involved there, financial interests, for fame, power, and few more things. I am also a psychoanalyst and as such I analyze the source of all this, the old question of each want to be the highlight among all. The best self-centeredness saying. Or, I would say ignorance, immaturity. But all this already existed in ancient China, it is not our creation. It is the general characteristic of beings evolving process. So the practice of martial arts requires a hard learning. And the result is the concept of Kung Fu, I usually translated as excellence.
In particular, do not believe in disputes. I think there is room for everyone. Each disclosing their ideas and who will follow. No need to convince everyone. This is nonsense!
Again, I see no way out. My way out is to relate to those who think like me. Which considers disputes a big silly and would rather be happy in harmony with others. Who does not agree with me I do not argue. Or who want to convince me of its truth I just listen and appreciate.
For my part, I am always open to hear and see. But if you fail me with the respect I ignore and continue my way.
I would love to see the people united. But I see it today as utopia.

Blog Dido - nowadays it is very easy to achieve, books, DVDs, e-books on Wing Chun online and many people say they are practicing wing chun only be studying
such material.contudo in the ving tsun, one of the most important aspects in the development of art is the sifu-todai relationship that propcia even a character improvement
and the sense of mo duk (martial virtue). Mr. You think pro practitioner, studying the ving tsun only in this way, would be a valid way?

A Professora Maria Antonieta Fernandes, grande amiga a quem rendo aqui homenagem.
Eu me “atirei na água”.
Bem, respondendo a questão inicial.

Sifu Augusto Carvalho - I do not approve, but not critical. I think sometimes a little is better than nothing.
I remember at the beginning of my search I was only articles in international journals, and the material on Bruce Lee that a friend translated for me. Then some national materials and Marco Natali books. Until I could actually train with Sifu.
I did not learn much from those sources of information. But it was useful to meet my initial curiosity and better understand my Sifu. When I started to follow their own path for about two years, I have collected a lot of material in books, videos and materials stemmed from several sources. As it was no longer a layman, much easier to understand certain information.
But only when I again touch with other teachers and finally my Master Sam Chan could I evolve. Ie really experience the Wing Chun.
In short, alternative methods can help. But are not complete. Learn and master Wing Chun indirectly is impossible for me. But do not criticize those who do. Because I do not know what the purpose of that person. Maybe she lives in the middle of the Amazon jungle and just want to have a little knowledge about something she likes. I would only critical to this person if she wanted to teach others with this type of learning. But still, I do not like to get involved with the third-party choices. Each one building their own karma. And action generates reaction.

Blog Dido - Mr. Could you give us more details on how mr. carries out its work of Jeet Kune Do? How do you. He came into contact with this art and as has been conducting its transmission?

Sifu Augusto Carvalho - This is a topic more polêmico.Vou start with the second point of the question and concluded with the initial question.
My contact with Bruce Lee, was through the television series "The Green Hornet" passing on Brazilian TV as Green Hornet. Maybe someone be surprised that I have attended this show. But I am a man about to turn 49 years on April 25 this year. So I have lived something.
With the untimely death of Master Bruce Lee, the martial arts world turned into a live volcano. Several publications have emerged, Fan Club around the world, followers, etc. So I started to read everything that talked about Bruce Lee to know one of the people who wrote for several national magazines on the subject. Professor Maria Antonieta Fernandes, a great friend who surrender tribute here. Antoinette is a singular figure, helping much, people like Marco Natali and Leo Imamura in everything that concerns the "Universe Bruce Lee and JKD." Besides me, of course.
By Antoinette I had access to information that she could with people as Linda Lee and Dan Inosanto, for example. At a time when there was no Internet, everything was by the same letters. I had access to works now exhausted and exclusive interviews. Beyond what was published. I kept in touch also with many Fan Club and other researchers in Brazil.
These sources were the means for me to try to understand the theoretical knowledge of JKD. The practice, followed the advice of Master Lee. I "shot in the water." I was a teenager gave the guy to beat. From thirteen to twenty years or so, I faced many opponents to test myself. But as there was no kung fu masters in my town I trained with friends, from the most diverse arts. Soon I was the coordinator of the group and then instructor. In 1990 I developed my own version of JKD.
But when I started in Wing Chun left side of this work, and dive in to understand Wing Chun. Only around 2006, with the greatest knowledge of Wing Chun is that I turned again to the JKD and found several "teachers" teaching there. I tried to contact some of them, but I found that most was just trying to make a mixture of various techniques. And everyone I was the owner of JKD. After contacting several former students (direct) Bruce Lee intended to train with one of them, I decided to put together a group of JKD studies. Because I felt that my years of research and practice could help many people.
Well, answering the initial question. How do I do that?
First I want to make it clear that not teaching Jeet Kune Do. The purpose of our group is to study the foundations left by Bruce Lee and try to apply them in our current reality. Ie not imitate Bruce Lee. For I am not a fan of Bruce Lee. But a student of his art and his life. His legacy. Even by the pure JKD died with Bruce. We can draw on his work, but never imitate his way of expressing. Everyone has to find his own.
Another point: what is the goal also is to create a strong group. And with that we make contact with people who have had direct training with Bruce or former students of it. And a person who has helped me a lot is my brother Kung Fu, Sifu Yakko Sideratos that is linked to school Jerry Poteet. Having gone to train in the United States directly with this line of JKD.
Unfortunately the person I admired most after Bruce died recently. It was Sifu Ted Wong. It trained in recent years with only Bruce JKD. And Ted Wong had never practiced other martial art. So I had no other influences. Your JKD was simple, pure.
But life goes on and we'll go ahead and say the Master Bruce Lee.
I intend to continue exchanges with other instructors and soon we will have many new features for the JKD interested in Brazil.

Blog Dido - A question quite common; Jeet Kune Do and Wing Chun are the same thing?

Sifu Augusto Carvalho - Yes and no! Wing Chun Kuen is a Chinese traditional martial art. Jeet Kune Do is the result of life experience of a former Wing Chun practitioner who embarked on other paths in search of total combat effectiveness. Moreover, Jeet without the basis of Wing Chun Kuen not exist. Here we have a decent paradox of martial arts from the Far East. Everything depends on the point of view of the analyzes.

Blog Dido - would like to thank immensely for your attention and I wish Mr. let your end considerations as well as your contacts, for those who want to know more and
deeper.

Sifu Augusto Carvalho - I would also like to thank his friend for the opportunity of this interview. I fervently hope that you continue to grow in Wing Chun with his SiFu, the SiFu Marcos Abreu, whom I greatly admire.
My final message to the readers of this blog is to think for themselves. Choose your Sifu not because he is famous is Chinese, is intellectual, it's good to fight, it's marketer, is talkative, it's great storyteller, etc, etc ... to choose their Sifu affinity with his person. See if in fact you and your Sifu can walk together for many years. Try, question, think, reflect and decide. If you feel you could call his father Sifu, then go ahead. But never allow anyone wants to dominate and enslave you. A Sifu, only points the way forward. Shares with you the experience. But it is never the owner of the truth.
