Chi Sau; Usando Lap Sau, Kwan Sau e Pak Sau - Chi Sau; Using Lap Sau, Kwan Sau and Pak Sau

Chi Sau is always a constant subject here on the blog and not for nothing; In addition to being an exercise I most enjoy practicing, according to SiFu is the '' Soul and Heart '' of the Wing Chun system.

However, we should not overestimate or underestimate their practice; It is necessary to understand its function within the Wing Chun system and how to take advantage of its practice. If you already follow the blog, you will remember subjects like; http://blogdodido-dido.blogspot.com/2011/06/chi-sao-alma-do-wing-chun.html, or http://blogdodido-dido.blogspot.com/2012/07/tang-chi -sao-and-more-important-than-the.html or even, http://blogdodido-dido.blogspot.com/2017/05/os-segredos-do-chi-sau-parte-um-secrets.html and so many others in our archive.

It is impressive also the cast of videos that exist on the internet on the subject. There are videos with '' techniques '', '' secrets '', '' tricks '' and all that is possible to see about Chi Sau. What impresses most, however, is the fact that in all of them, a "show" of speed, force, fast and incredible blows are delivered in such a way, beautiful to see, that they seem more demonstrations of abilities instead of what it really is .... However, most of the time what these guys do not mind is the fact that no one becomes good at fighting just because they practice Chi Sau, or as SiFu says; - '' Chi Sau / Lap Sau does not prepare you for the fight. ''I still venture to say that worse than not preparing for the fight, is that it is pure waste of time to practice Chi Sau just for the purpose of exchanging punches trying to tie the arms of the training partner, imposing a technical pseudo-superiority that convinces the ego more than any other terrestrial being, appearing to be in a row of senseless cats. That, at least in my opinion, is still the most non-sense when we speak of Chi Sau. Because even in these cases, nothing, absolutely nothing is amenable to application, verification and logical analysis. It may sound like my arrogance, but it is not. If we analyze with coolness, it is the same case of so many and so many videos with the shape of the wooden dummy, where the guys show speed, beat like a makiwara and so on .... The big problem of not understanding the Chi Sau's function (Yes, It has a function!) within the Wing Chun system is to think that just as you are practicing with the partner, you can fight in the same way.

In fact this comes from the fact that most average practitioners train Wing Chun movements, or forms, or fighting drills, as frozen combat techniques. What we train in a Wing Chun that works are not techniques-answers (if the opponent makes a move A, I respond with a move B) but rather, what we aim at is building good fighting habits through maintaining good posture , energy, reflexes, increased cardio-muscular endurance, among other attributes; This means that every exercise, every offensive and counter-offensive movement, whatever it is, comes with principles and purposes inherent in each exercise. Nothing is trained or practiced for free. However, Chi Sau may superficially mean "sticking arms," it's always good to have one or two "tricks up your sleeve." But that's where the problems begin .... Because the purpose in general is not quite this, and then the divergent interpretations of one another appear more clearly. The way each teacher / instructor / practitioner understands certain ways of training, such as when and where each 'hand' can be used, how many X possibilities can be explored can range from the most logically acceptable to the height of the absurd non -sense. It is always up to the evaluation criterion of each student. But if we observe the most basic in a logical way, some notions and lessons can be taken quite simply, always using the elements contained in the movements coming from both the forms and auxiliary exercises to understand the best way to take some action , for example because we are in a position with both hands through the door inside (The importance of the basic ones: Hi Moon, Noi Moon) does not help us if we want to apply a Pak Sau? In this article, we will go through a simple way, using the most logical way of observing, with two basic examples of how we can use three simple "hands" in Chi Sau; Lap Sau, Kwan Sau and Pak Sau.

Alternativa contra-ofensiva para Pak Sau
Counter-offensive alternative to Pak Sau

Utilizar o Pak Sau já foi visto e revisto aqui no blog ( vide matéria http://blogdodido-dido.blogspot.com/2017/12/usando-pak-sau-no-chi-sau-using-pak-sau.html) mas o que não foi dito é que,em termos gerais, quando você pratica um exercício como esse, no intuito de treinar a reação, Kwan Sau como visto na matéria anterior é apenas uma, das inúmeras possibilidades de reação para o Pak Sau. Aliás, para cada movimento ofensivo,existem pelo menos de duas a três possibilidades de respostas contra-ofensivas onde o propósito é a reação rápida, sem parar para pensar em qual utilizar. Vamos ver um video curto,onde mostro com meu estudante João,um recurso de prosseguimento para o Pak Sau,para podermos entender uma ação contra ofensiva que virá mais a frente;

Using Pak Sau has already been seen and reviewed here in the blog (see article http://blogdodido-dido.blogspot.com/2017/12/usando-pak-sau-no-chi-sau-using-pak-sau.html ) but what has not been said is that in general terms, when you practice such an exercise in order to train the reaction, Kwan Sau as seen in the previous story is only one of the countless possibilities of reaction for the Pak Sau. Incidentally, for each offensive move, there are at least two to three possibilities for counter-offensive responses where the purpose is quick reaction, without stopping to think about which to use. Let's see a short video, where I show my student John, a follow-up resource for Pak Sau, so we can understand an offensive action that will come later;

Notice that when I do the Pak Sau and punch in, John's left hand is '' free, '' in case he wants to make a '' outward '' circular motion, I would not - in theory - it. In fact, one of the counter-offensive possibilities for him would be to enjoy and '' return '' my Pak Sau with my right hand and go outside with my left hand circling and go straight to my face. Forget the Fak Sau that I do next, repeating Pak Sau and blah blah blah. The focus here is not that.

Flowing with Kwan Sau; Changing Offensive and Defensive Modes

In the same way, I start the movement with Pak Sau, advancing. Of course, for lack of timing, John does not use Kwan Sau, but attempts a counter-offensive, doing exactly as I described above, trying to hit me on the other side. He redirects my punch, taking both of Pak Sau's hands, as much as I would use to punch him. What a great '' exit ''.

But one of the characteristics of the Wing Chun system is the versatility of turning an 'offensive hand' into a 'defensive hand', and vice versa, both to cover spaces and to take advantage of the ' a better positioning, attack, or any other strategic resource. So, without waiting for John, I turn turning my punch into Bong Sau, so as not to give him room and at the same time, the hand that was in Pak Sau, I transformed into Tan Sau, stopping his attack and covering the exposed area, with Kwan Sau.

Kwan Sau is one of the most useful and safe hands to use in this exercise. There are exercises that try to refine this combination of Bong Sau + Tan Sau and the tip I give is; Practice it whenever you can ...Note that I try not to give space to John and use Lap Sau, pulling his right arm as I transform once more, the hand that was defensive, offensive, passing my elbow and hitting the chest of João (Lap Da).

Still as a continuity, I shift my right hand to Lan Sau and hold both of John's arms, turning my base, continue advancing and thus releasing my left hand to hit him once again

Utilizando Lap Sau: Parando o Lap Sau com Kwan Sau
Using Lap Sau: Stopping Lap Sau with Kwan Sau

Vejamos mais um video curto...
Let's see another short video ...

John and I are in the '' right standard '' of Chi Sau (One hand on the inside door, another on the outside door, with Bong Sau on the right.) This, like Pak Sau is a simple procedure; I pull the left hand of John who is in Fuk Sau high with my right hand and use the weight of my base down, to pass my punch with his left hand, breaking the structure of his Tan Sau. Always forward, in this case.

A follow up that can be used is to proceed with a Pak Sau just after the Lap Da with a small adjustment of the base only.

However, Lap Sau in this case can also be '' stopped '', using - once again - Kwan Sau. The big X of the issue here is not to 'fight' against the Lap Sau, let's see?

In this other moment of our practice, John tries to use exactly the Lap Sau; pulling my arm and trying to punch. I for my part, do not fight against his resistance, which if you notice, makes use of body weight to try to move forward. However, I leave my arm that was drawn to follow, and clay the left punch of it changing my Tan Sau to Bong Sau (Basic rule, SiFu saying; - '' In Chi Sau All Tan Sau, turns Bong Sau and vice versa ''), rotating my base. With the '' trapped '' arm, I let it be stretched to the momentum of resistance and spinning out, becoming easy to release, but only if the base spin is at the same time. As my priority is to cover the space that remained, I do not wait to see if John will hit me a punch or palm, I turn and cover the space with Tan Sau, which by continuous action, he gives up pulling me and tries to hit me , however, stops in the attempt to attack with his palm, as he has found a greater resistance and the Tan Sau already closing the area while advancing.

Manter a estrutura e posicionamento, é o principal.

We can then think - and what can be taken as a lesson for a combat or application environment -  that moving forward is very important. Maintaining the structure and positioning, is the main.Using the base and hands together all the time is a key to good movements. Because once you exit, if you do not position your weapons well in the most appropriate angles, you will certainly be hit. The important thing is to try to find a way by yourself and see that there are infinite possibilities to flow from one movement to another, without necessarily having to break rules, mixing other styles or trying more stupid things (How to try to make Chi Sau with twoo opponents to Same time).

If well targeted, a good Chi Sau practice can bring in good returns once you understand how you can improve your coordination, your strengths and cover your weaknesses. No matter how much you train, there will always be mistakes, failures and points to be improved ... So the most important thing is to keep practice independent of anything.

Até a próxima.

Usando Pak Sau no Chi Sau; Using Pak Sau on Chi Sau training

Chi Sau é o coração do Wing Chun.

Chi Sau is the heart of Wing Chun. It is an exclusive training  of Wing Chun system and you will find no similar in any other style or martial system. The purpose of the Chi Sau training is to develop attributes that will be used in the fight, in a playful exercise where the basic premise is the contact with the training partner in an exchange of positions and direction of energy (read, appropriate effort in direction and correct angles) in a predetermined manner, where several "hands" of the system can be used. It is an exercise that develops the reflex to the short distance, sensibility, sense of opportunity and its main premise, at least in our lineage, is to teach to cover spaces, acting without thinking about it, in automatic way.

It is extremely difficult to attempt to write about something that can only be fully understood in practice, but I will do my best so that the reader can understand some of the purpose of this training. Chi Sau is an exercise. It is a tool for developing skills. I've seen a lot of people using Chi Sau as a controlled form of fight . But that is not the purpose at all. The idea is to allow training to occur to both, in a fluid way. Believe me, friend reader, you will find everything there; From people who challenge other Wing Chun practitioners to a Chi Sau friendly match, even people who do Chi Sau with two training partners, one in each arm !!! I will not say who is right or wrong, but on the contrary, I ask the reader to use his common sense and analyze everything impartially; Read the article and draw your own conclusions; Whether I am right or not, there is only one way to know; Trying!

Techniques in Chi Sau

First of all, "techniques" in Chi Sau do not mean much if the practitioner does not have a good criterion of position, angle and energy. According to Sigung Li Hon Ki and as I was verbally passed to me by my SiFu, these are the mainstays for anything in Wing Chun; Positioning, angle and energy. This is expressed in Chi Sau already since the '' Cycle ''

''Ciclo''???

''Cycle''???

In fact, it is not a "circular" or round movement, or something that refers to it. What is commonly called the '' cycle '' of Chi Sau in some schools is actually what is known in some schools as '' Luk Sau ''. The most common pattern of Luk Sau is; One hand Tan Sau / Bong Sau, this hand usually being right, through the inside door, while the other hand is in Fuk Sau, through the outside door. In some schools, it is called the '' right standard of luk sau ''.
In some schools, you can see that to improve this '' turn by hands '', you, in the absence of a partner, train with a ring. Now notice; To keep the ring in your arms, you will have to press your '' edges '' outwards, to keep the ring in your arms, while turning Bong Sau / Tan Sau on both hands. Thus, your pressure exerted will not go forward, but rather outward, which breaks the idea of Chung Chi - Energy forward. Therefore, the prerequisite of Chi Sau is to train with a living partner, not with machines or any other craftsman. In our lineage, we usually call Chi Sau or Double hands Chi Sau. Nothing else.

As previously stated, if you have a good positioning of both hands, correctly directing the pressure forward, in triangular wedges (from the base, and here we apply the concept of Chung Chi- Energy forward, once again), you will have a good control and will let you out with any technique. there are some details that not to leave the article too long I will not explain. But basically the idea is always to maintain your position properly while '' covering your technical faults '' before the training partner notices them.
While we alternate the positions of our arms and hold them in the arms of the opponent, we must awaken our attention at all times not to fail and to give the necessary gap to the opponent. That is why Chi Sau is a very elaborate but at the same time dynamic and "organic" mental game.
But to not only remain in position change, let's understand how we can make a simple attack, creating an opening using Pak Sau (seen in the form Siu nim Tau).

Utilizando o Pak Sau no Chi Sau

Using Pak Sau in Chi Sau

My student John (white shirt) and I are in Chi Sau, using what is called by some lineages as '' right standard of Chi Sau ''. At our school, we simply call it '' Chi Sau with two hands '', or the English '' Double hands Chi Sau ''. The emphasis here is on correct positioning of the elbows and energy (read effort with proper directionality and intensity) in the right direction so that we do not err and with that, the opponent has the chance to hit us, and at the same time through perception , try to make him make a mistake so that we can act before he realizes.

Foto 01

Manter o posicionamento apropriado durante a dinâmica do treinamento é o desafio.

When we reverse the positioning, we must maintain these same prerequisites; Positioning, angles and energy going in the direction, with intensity and in the correct angle. Maintaining proper placement during training dynamics is the challenge.

all the more basic hands of the Wing Chun system can be placed within these more dynamic exercises. However, just as for every '' service '' you need the appropriate tool, everything in Wing Chun should be executed with the right purpose in the best way. Exemplifying; If you have a hammer and a screw, you are certainly trying to screw the part with the wrong tool. Better would be a screwdriver for the service. However, we can not say that they are not good tools, but we can say that there are the right tools for a given service. The simplest way sometimes turns out to be the most effective.

In the same way, we know that Pak Sau can be put into Chi Sau properly, because there is a way to do this. The best way to apply Pak Sau (or see old stuff right here on the blog) in Chi Sau is to use it to create an opening when the opponent has a good positioning and does not give up their pressure.

Foto 02
Photo 02

In order to use Pak Sau, it is necessary for you to reach the position where your Bong Sau is well placed for the opponent's Fuk Sau and your Fuk Sau retaining control of the training partner Tan Sau, as exemplified in the photo above . When properly positioned, both practitioners can not be reached even if the energies are moving in the right direction, in opposite directions (here also applies the notion of frontal opposition,Doi Yeng, where both energies follow from different points going to the same point) , for this, it is necessary that an opening be "created".

I start the movement by turning my Bong Sau along with my horse in Joh Mah (digging or turning the horse) that is where the force will come from. Many tpeople hink that generating force in Chi Sau requires you to have strong arms. However, all the strength you will need will come from your horse, from your footwork. Notice that by this positioning, at the same time that I turn my base, my hand that was in Fuk Sau continues to control the Tan Sau of my training partner while he moves preparing the cover.

One of the best known concepts in Chi Sau is the '' One controls two ''. Which basically means that the practitioner will use one hand to control the two hands of the training partner while the other hand goes free forward. When I complete the turn from Bong Sau to Tan Sau (which may be associated with Bong Sau / Faan Tan Sau of the third part of the Siu Nim Tau form), along with my horse, my right hand has a free path to follow, at the same time as PAK (slap) coming at the same time, controlling both Tan Sau's hand right side of my training partner, how much to remove the Fuk Sau on the left side with the same slap.

Look; when advancing on Toy Mah (pushing horse) I keep glued to the training partner, while my free hand follows in full attack, not giving enough space for the training partner to have some reaction. My left hand has already freed the opponent's right hand with Pak and at the same time keeps in control his right hand already removed from the space where my blow is passing and reaching the plexus of the training partner, although not catching it .

In general, the technique may be complemented by a "follow up", or proceeding with one or more techniques or attacks thereafter.

....................................................................................................................................................................

Now for each technique, there are at least 4 types of responses that can be performed to recover space, to stop or to redirect the attack coming from the training partner, if you have conditions and enough space to execute. The most basic one uses one of the most famous 'hands' of the system, called Kwan Sau. Kwan Sau has already been seen here on the blog and has at least four very basic variations; Kwan Sau jaming in Chi Sau with the intention of stopping the attack (which is what we will see now) or to open the opponent's guard when you are occupying the two doors inside, Kwan Sau to cover direct attacks on the face, with retreat simple or rotating. Kwan Sau to stop roundhouse kicks and allow follow ups with various techniques (Pak Sau, Tan Dar, etc ...) and Kwan Sau used along with Bong Gurk to cover an entire side of the entire body against unexpected attacks. Each of these would need an article to explain, but let's take a quick look at this one in particular.

Answering Pak Sau with Kwan Sau

Kwan Sau as a response to the simpler Pak Sau depends a lot on you relax and re-position your arm removed to cover the area that was artificially created with the Bong Sau that comes from the practitioner who applies the Pak Sau. When the attack comes, you often have no way of responding immediately if you use a very stiff move against the opponents' opponent (Pak), and then you will be breaking the principle of not using force against force ''. You take advantage of Pak Sau's strength from the partner to rotate his arm inside and reposition the Fuk Sau, before out the door in Tan Sau now, it slammed inside.

John uses Pak Sau and tries to punch with his right hand. For my part, I use the same impulse he gave with his left hand to turn and reposition my Pak Sau, now in Tan Sau, barring his movement.
The detail is that my right hand does not get inert. When John uses the slap with his left hand and 'drags' my right hand that was in Tan Sau, I also take advantage of that impulse he gives me to bar the hand left him with Bong Sau, obeying the premise that "Every Bong Sau turns Tan Sau / All Tan Sau becomes Bong Sau." Before moving forward with Toy Mah, feeling that he will do the Pak Sau along with these hand movements, I leave with my horse 45 degrees ahead, so that my two waists (pelvic and scapular) can rotate while I perform the Kwan sau '' supported ''

Foto 07
Photo 07

John barred my breakthrough with Kwan Sau. At this angle, notice the Bong Sau of John's right arm; It should be glued to the opponent's forearm in a way that does not give way to any counter-offensive movement. Tan Sau should not follow too much '' out '' or '' down, '' but he must move forward for two reasons; One keep it safe and at the same time ready for any other more direct offensive action.
A possible deployment for me in this position would be to use Lap Sau to pull John's Tan Sau down and taking the necessary space, sliding John's own Bong Sau a punch or other attack, keeping the elbow of my punch down. Or, go with another Pak Sau removing John's Tan Sau with a Pak and punching with his left hand, which would force him to use another Kwan Sau, reversing the side ... but that's another story ...

Foto 08
Photo 08

Here I exemplify for John the proper way forward with the base while using Kwan Sau. This is a joint action of the whole body within a single movement. As my left hand is in Tan Sau, covering the area where John's punch would come, so that my Bong Sau in the right hand can have the necessary support and help in the pressure so that his left hand does not have enough room for ' slip 'over my Bong Sau, I walk with my left foot, turning the hip. Some lineages do this same step, with the right foot putting the body more to the side and the turning closing a little more the center. This way you walk is not wrong. But it is not the way we normally do, however, this may be a '' upside down card '' if there is a need to "break the rule."

Teaching Chi Sau and practicing Chi Sau requires a lot of patience, hours and hours of practice. Each movement has numerous possibilities for unfolding, always starting from the analysis of the situations that appear in this game that aims to develop specific skills that will be used in combat.
Some guys are going to use Chi sau to give a show, or to impress the laity, or even measure forces against other guys without necessarily having to fight. However, one must understand the motivations; There is no sense in looking at Chi Sau as a '' controlled struggle ''. If a boxeur arrives at his Wing Chun gym and challenges him to a fight, will you call him to do Chi Sau ? He will not respect this ... Some detractors (especially here in Recife) will say I'm talking nonsense and I believe, many will criticize this post ... Basically I like criticism, but in china there is a saying that says' This is YOUR opinion. '' So ... So what if they are related, they can try in practice if I am right or not.

Por enquanto, é isso. Até mais
For now, that's it. See you.

Os segredos do Chi Sau, parte um ( ? ) - The secrets of Chi Sau - part one ( ? )

One of the most underestimated exercises, stigmatized and sometimes ridiculed by non-practitioners of the Wing Chun system and laymen (laymen in the sense of not knowing this specificity) is the notorious Chi Sau.
Yes, perhaps this is one of the most misunderstood aspects of the Wing Chun system and not infrequently, Wing Chun practitioners have misconceptions about this exercise, its purpose, and how we can draw lessons for the fight by practicing it. Right here on the blog, there have been countless stories on the subject and every now and then, we receive emails, messages and even smoke signals from Aztec Indians talking, wanting about it. So, let's try to elucidate here for the reader friend, what are the main points about this exercise.
For this, I ask for the understanding that everything I write here goes through the filter of my own understanding of what I have been studying with my SiFu and my own experience. As always, I intend to cover the maximum of related topics even though I know that the subject could yield an entire book and many Wing Chun Masters and practitioners have different understandings about the subject, and may disagree with what I have here or not ... So, let's go over there...

O que raios é Chi Sau??
What the hell is Chi Sau ??

Chi Sau, meaning "Energy by the hands", or more accurately translated as "Sticky hands", "sticky hands", etc ... etc ... You will find different transliterations and translations On this term, depending on the lineage, the preference of the teacher and the dialect ( in fact, all the workout of chi sau is focused on the ricght positions of the elbows, the understanding or all articulations of the arms and how to generate power using the horse ; of course its innumerable details to do a good chi sau exercise) . It was convened by Bruce Lee to have made this style famous, this exercise was known as '' Sticking hands '' or '' trapping hands '' and is an exercise that finds no similar in other styles of kung fu. Perhaps the closest is the Tui Shou of Tai Chi Chuan. But in fact, we can not make technical comparisons of each other because although they are aesthetically similar, the ideas behind each of these exercises are completely different.
Chi Sau is always executed in two, so that it is a form of training that is still seen on the first level of the Wing Chun system (Siu Nim Tau) in its simplest and most important form, called '' Dan (Or Tang) Chi Sau '', also known as '' Single Hands Chi Sau '', which is the same exercise performed with just one hand. It is very important the premise of being in contact with the opponent so that it is through this that one can develop the main attributes to which this exercise intends. So, training Chi Sau 'alone', or with equipment that aims to replace a training partner - How many were no longer the practitioners who tried to innovate the style trying to create devices or even wooden dolls with joints that aim to 'imitate' Chi Sau? - It's a waste of time! No equipment will bring you the sense of attention that is so necessary for Chi Sau practice.
When a practitioner will begin this exercise, he will already have seen the entire first form (Siu Nim Tau) and understood his technical elements with emphasis on the first part of the form. The most important elements here will be Tan Sau, Sau Bong, Fuk Sau, Wu Sau, Ding Jeang, Yat Ji Jung Choy and Hieung Sau. It is only common to mention that the three most important hands for the mastery of this exercise are Tan, Bong and Fuk, but in fact the other "hands" mentioned above also play an important role in the development of this exercise.

(My SiDai Pedro and I, at the headquarters of the Brazilian Wing Chun Academy.) In this training, which took place around 6:30 in the morning, I give him the contents of Dan -Tang-Chi Sau)

As the practitioner matures his technique, he is introduced to what we call the "double hands Chi Sau," or in Cantonese terms "Seong Chi Sau," which is nothing more than the Chi Sau exercise With both hands. Even though many of the curriculum of many wing chun schools are just the simplest form of Dan Chi Sau (with a single response to a single type of attack and counter-movement), and then already introducing their students to two-handed exercises, Other schools have technical variations for each type of defense and attack that emphasize their principles with variations and technical examples still in the simplest exercise.
In the same way, the different Wing Chun families have jobs that are often ordered, often freer, or additional works such as Chi Geurk, or Lei Dei Chi Sau (Chi Sau seated), which is not the case for mentioning in the time.
At this point, the practitioner already understands concepts such as '' Oi Moon '', '' Noi Moon '' (inside door and outside door) understands the importance of triangular wedges, which is long bridge and what is short bridge , Etc etc .... Always keeping in mind the main purposes of this exercise. But make no mistake; The Tang Chi Sau is as or more important than the Chi Sau with both hands up! Since without understanding the simplest, the most complex simply does not happen!

And by any chance what are your main purposes and why train it?

Chi Sau teaches no one to fight! This is the point !! Face Chi Sau with the vision of being a microcosm within a macrocosm; This macrocosm is nothing more than the struggle itself. By this I mean that this exercise is only part of an even larger whole. However, it is increasingly common to see videos of people practicing Chi Sau swapping slaps of everything that is without the least notion of what is being done! In this way, an exercise that is no longer well understood becomes useless! I will not even mention the videos that are sometimes harshly criticized by non-wing-chun practitioners as being pure '' cat fights ''. Which is right to be seen from this angle, since the so-called "masters" of wing chun only make change arms, touches and blows without purpose.
In fact, half of these guys do not even know what they're training for ... Using some behavioral patterns, we can tell if someone has a good Chi Sau or not (for example, if a guy tries to use Ding Geurk The Luk Sau to hit the chest of the training partner, I can say that this guy does not have a good Chi Sau, since any expert in Chi Sau knows that a step forward is enough and the guy loses his balance without even giving himself up. Work to defend) and yet, we can not say whether this person is really good at fighting ... What gives space to people who do not understand their purpose, openly criticize the style.

(Gabi and I, my more technical student, practicing the '' Double Hands Chi Sau '' at Eden - School of dance and natural exercises, headquarters of the Brazilian Wing Chun Academy - Recife core)

Yes, Chi Sau greatly helps the Wing Chun practitioner to develop certain psychomotor skills, coordination, good reflexes, reaction time, etc, etc ... But you see; Other martial arts styles also train these same skills without having Chi Sau as part of their methods. So why is he important to the Wing Chun system?
The answer may be its basic premise; Chi Sau teaches no one to fight, nor does he fight using Chi Sau (Imagine the ridiculous scene; a boxing practitioner arrives at a Wing Chun gym and challenges the instructor; the instructor calls the boxing fighter for a game of Chi Sau .. How can the boxer do this if he does not know Chi Sau ???) but teaches by means of a 'game' of exchange of positions through the use of the elements contained in his forms the strategy of covering spaces, reacting and acting Without having to think, emphasizing, once again, the use of its technical elements, whether simple or combined, which characterizes its technical function within the system. That's why Chi Sau is important in Wing Chun and this is his main premise! Chi Sau teaches you to anticipate the opponent's movement and to cover spaces without thinking about it within a format where the technical elements contained in the forms will create their logic of movement. In this way, '' scoring points '' by touching the chest of the training partner does not mean much in this exercise. You will only be able to cover certain spaces and have a good positioning criterion when you feel really threatened!
SiFu told me a few times that SiGung Li Hon Ki had a very peculiar anecdote when he came across Wing Chun practitioners who did not hit the punches and only "touched"; He interrupted the practice and asked the partner to 'massage' the opposite side, since his goals did not cause him any damage. However, he soon warned; - '' Chi Sau you hit hard or you do not hit! ''
Covering acting spaces before the opponent notices technical failure without having to think about it while acting appropriately is a key principle in this exercise. Without understanding this, it is practically useless to train Chi Sau. So let's try to understand this key point ...

Cobrir X Bloquear golpes ( outra vez!)
Cover X Blocking(again!)

Covering spaces has already been discussed here on this blog several times. Therefore, we will focus on trying to explain how to cover properly and explain what kind of reaction and how we will "cover" spaces (read, occasional openings due to innumerable factors such as positioning failures, technical misunderstandings, Where the training partner will cast his punches) within Chi Sau. But putting it rather coarsely and summarily; Block means to see and react, which is to be one step behind the opponent, while for you to be one step ahead of your opponent you need to act and anticipate, that is to cover.
Imagine the following situation; When you're on the street and someone yells your name, you stop and think; '' Is this my name? '' '' Did he call my name correctly? '' '' Is my name my name? '' Or do you simply turn around looking for who called you automatically? Or when you're in a circle of friends and some distracted smoker accidentally leaves your cigarette near your arm, you simply take your arm away from the smoking tip of the cigarette or stop and see if your friend's cigarette is in the left or right hand , Whether you're too close or too far away, whether he realized it or not ... etc ... etc ...?
The truth is that when someone calls you, you turn around even before you think! In the second situation you will probably take your arm out of the way of the cigarette without having to even think about it! And it is this kind of 'reaction' that develops when practicing Chi Sau! Develop this kind of natural reaction. With the difference that you will use the technical combinations and technical elements contained in the system (so be in the direction of constant attention is paramount) to respond appropriately. To respond properly without thinking about how to do this, it is necessary to practice the technique countless times, until it becomes automatic, making the movement '' enter '' in your nervous system so that only moments later you can rationalize on the subject , Making the technique BE your natural reaction.

Now it's obvious that you can not just think of '' re-action '' (acting after an action already taken). The Wing Chun practitioner must be very judgmental about his own positioning and perform his positionings properly in the proper angles, put the energy in the right direction, which in the case, the practitioner should already understand the concept of Chung Chi - energy for - to know how to use his base and the base of the opponent in his favor, to know how to occupy - to cover - and to search - to attack - the center, to stay the shortest distance to the attack, all this in order to induce his Training to technical error and allow you to proceed with an attack.
That is, you can not be idle and just be doing the Luk Sau, commonly known in various wing chun families as the handshake cycle (Note here; visually, changing positioning in Luk Sau causes many People to believe that this alternating movement is circular, which would explain Chi Sau's training with a hoop in the absence of a training partner. This idea is mistaken, since it is not a 'circular movement', but Of a cone-shaped movement.Training with a hoop would require you to press the hoops by putting your energy out, which goes against the Chung Chi principle), but you must be active all the time. Achievement and constant acting are also important to induce your training partner to err and thus make your technical move more offensive. This will be reflected in the field of open fighting and will have important strategic developments within combat.

 Chi Sau; Aplicando em combate
Chi Sau; Applying in combat

SiFu brilliantly wrote a subject on the subject a few years ago in a very succinct way and worth mentioning; And I could simply indicate this matter and close the subject here, since it explains Peculiar way how we can and how we can not apply the Chi Sau principles in struggle. Stop reading it here and go there at this link read, when you finish, return here ...

The idea is that in practice, the technical gesture trained conceptually within this specific exercise may appear through the combat situation, not in the same way as seen in the forms or exactly equal to the exercise; You will always need some kind of technical premise or specific targeting for a given combat situation before the technique can appear; Hence the importance of a training method. Our most striking example is the work of SiFu made with UFC professional Hugo Wolverine Vianna.

Hugo Wolverine Vianna running Kwai Jian, elbowed view in Biu Ji form and trained within the standards of Chi Sau / Lap Sau with SiFu; The specificity of the training directed the method of work and the technique came at the right moment. The phrase of Budah is the basic premise of our school; - '' application is the only way of verifying the truth "is undoubtedly expressed in this photo. Below, check out the video of SiFu training Hugo in Chi Sau

E ai, entramos no nosso próximo tópico...

The truth is that Wing Chun's refined practitioners avoid free striking in the fight, preferring to use strategy and achievement appropriately. This is when the premise is always put down as smaller, slower and weaker than your opponent. This is also basically key piece in Chi Sau. When Wing Chun practitioners begin their chi sau with the luk sau and within a few seconds they swap hard and crookedly, the exercise is completely lost. And so, we get on to our next topic ...

Onde é que NÃO se usa o Chi Sau?
Where does Chi Sau NOT use?

From time to time appear videos of competitions of Chi Sau where, as quoted above, the practitioners appear exchanging slaps and no one is applying anything with anything. Chi Sau is definitely not a form of fighting. Although in the past and still today in some situations, this exercise can be a gentle way to measure the ability of a wing chun practitioner, Chi Sau is definitely not a fight-controlled form within the Wing Chun system. Definitely!
Do not use Chi Sau to fight with your partner. This is just an exercise, nothing more! If you want to fight with your training partner, put on boxing gloves and get into a ring! Despite the use of offensive and defensive elements, 'knocking' and '' being hit '' in Chi Sau does not necessarily mean victory Or defeat in a struggle, but rather helps to understand certain bodily vices and to understand the use of the technical elements of the system. As stated earlier, there is no sense in a wing chun practitioner challenging a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner for a "chi sau fight", you see?

Once again; One does not struggle using Chi Sau, but rather uses the benefits derived from his practice and its principles. What might be called '' sensitivity '' can be defined as the ability to simultaneously use technical skills such as sense of opportunity, reflexes, sense of anticipation, timing for action, ability to read opponent's intentions, knowing When to be "stuck", or when to "break" the contact with the training partner, as well as knowing when to use a "fair game" with valid strokes or to use a "dirty game", too.

Of course, there is much more to Chi Sau and how this exercise can greatly assist Wing Chun practitioners. Maybe there is a "part two" of this article but to not stretch too long, I stop here.

Bem, até mais
Well, see you!
