Terminologias - Qual o problema delas? Terminology - What is their problem?

When my last trip to Salvador, I decided to appear much less formal and more relaxed than usual and to express it, to get off the plane, I was wearing a T-shirt I got from my mother when we were in Natal - RN (a journey family), emblazoned with a parody will famous brand Lacoste, where it read, in fact the word '' Lascosse '', which Si Fu noticed right away, with a subtle - '' I liked the T-shirt, Dido. ''

(In Recife Airport with my then student Augusto Pereira, repair the T-Shirt)

(risos).

For those unfamiliar, this joke is on top of a very popular expression in northeastern Brazil, where the subject '' If chipped, '' or '' If it bad. '' Lascosse'' this case would be a written variation of '' Lascou-se'' (Chipped up) '', to deliberately remember the famous brand. The T-Shirt comes up with the stamped alligator ... cool as hell! (laughs).

For me, if you have something that really seems confusing at the Wing Chun universe are their terminology. Given the fact that in China, are spoken no less than 58 dialects (according to verifiable data on the Internet) - including its variations - for the average Westerner, who does not speak Chinese dialect, or any of its variations - everything is even more confusing . Nevertheless, Mandarin courses (said traditional Chinese) has taken highlights in learning environments from a distance over the Internet and has caused interest not only fighters, but people interested in Eastern culture in general.

Specifically, the Wing Chun style comes from the south of China, as we all know - having its origin connected to the city of Fo Shan ('Fat San') in the province of Gwandong in Canton (Guangzhou) South China. So his original dialect, ie their 'mother tongue' is especially the Cantonese, yet it is common to find different terms, almost equidistant to each translation of the Chinese - or Cantonese or any other dialect - for Latin languages specific terms relating to training, or will other aspects. It is also common terms equivalent in meaning, writing and translation are found in distinct styles of kung fu that have the same geological region of origem.Ou even very similar written variations to the game of my T-Shirt, mentioned above ....

Given the variations in transliteration into the Romanized languages, an important point will know is that the characters in Cantonese do not suffer alterações.Os characters to designate Siu Lin Tao for example, are the same in FoShan and Hong Kong, for example, but the Romanized form has just been changing, most likely influenced by the pronunciation and in the case of Wing Chun, despite all the historical, theoretical and cultural knowledge is not widely documented, it becomes more interesting this peculiarity.

However, from the beginning, teachers and practitioners always sought to safeguard this oral legacy. Several works deal on this subject and perhaps the most notable of these is the collection of stamps '' Ving Tsun Kuen kuits '' of Grand Master Moy Yat.

E qual o problema disso tudo?

These works, ultimately, are artistic ways to preserve this legacy writing (or in the form of stamps, in this case in particular) of major importance. However, without a person qualified with extensive knowledge on the subject, it is very difficult for the average student to understand the real meaning of the characters, and the terms of existing windings in type work.

And what's wrong about that?

Os seis domínios - ou fases vivenciais do treinamento do sistema Wing Chun;

The whole problem is basically the interpretation that every master gives to each of these terms, especially here in Brazil, where many instructors do not undermine the study of this particular ....
In general, some terms are equivalent, other quite different. So it is important to note at least the basics .... Students who are not familiar or not interested in even know the basics, can commit blunders in dealing with a 'senior', for example.

Taking a quick look at some sites, I ended up finding a broad framework on the subject, but I share only a short stretch, I adapted to this post and that gives us an idea of the different ways of referring to a single term. (The Romanized terms in the first highlights do not necessarily correspond with the translation side, but are merely illustrative. In parenthesis is the romanization of Mandarin-Chinese pronunciation).
The six areas - or experiential stages of the Wing Chun training;

Cantonês (Mandarin-pinyin)Português -BRCaracteres
Siu Lim Tao - Siu Nim Tau (xiǎo niàn tou)"Pequena idea inicial", ''Pequena idéia'',
Chum Kiu, Cham kiu (xún qiáo)"Destruir a ponte", ''Procurar a ponte'', ''Afundar a ponte''
Biu Jee (biāo zhǐ),Biu Gi,Biu Gee"Dedos penetrantes",''Dedos voadores'', ''padrão de bússola''
Muk Yan Jong,MukJong,108 Muk yan Jong (mùrén zhuāng)''Pilar do homem de madeira'' ,''108 pilar do home de madeira''
Luk Dim Boon Gwun, Luk Dim poon Kwan (liùdiǎnbàn gùn)"Bastão de 6 1/2 pontos", ''bastão de seis pontos e meio'', ''Bastão longo''
Bat Jam Dou, Pa chan tou,Baart Jam Doa (bā zhǎn dāo)"Facas de 8 cortes ", ''Facas duplas de oito cortes''

And how important to know this differentiation?

In fact, in practical terms, a technical name is not a matter of definition, ie set marking an end in itself, given the fact that the wing chun, a move can be either an offensive as defensive move, but to understand the nature this technique employee by name .... for example, Kwan Sau, roughly means '' Atar arms '' and the movement closely resembles the tying of a knot, with one hand doing Bong Sau (hands on '' wings '' , 膀 手, Bang Shou, in Mandarin) and the other hand on tan Sau (hands scattering, tan Shou, 攤手, 摊手). Have your technical function or duties at almost nothing to do with this reference.

Anyway, be familiar with the terms will facilitate the understanding of both movements, the principles and it is always good to observe the forms of treatment with Seniors and general art of brothers (see previous posts on the subject), taking care do not abbreviate formalities, for example; Call your Sibaakgung of Sibaak only, shortening the term, is not in good taste.
To discern between a through romanization of Cantonese or Mandarin only prevents the student does not change '' garlic for oranges '', but the most common is that in the practice time, the student even remember the names, since he will have priority execute the techniques repeatedly, will such an extent that he even have to think, just '' pouring out '' the movement ...

Até a próxima.
