And it is with great honor that Dido's blog interview this month, one of the most respected names in Wing Chun national, Sifu Marcos Wendell Sales de Abreu, better known in martial means simply as Marcos de Abreu.

Sifu 'Marcos de Abreu' born in São Paulo, Prof. of Physical Education and Master of the 9th generation of Wing Chun Kuen, Chinese martial art popularized thanks to superstar Bruce Lee. His experience includes fights in tournaments, training in China with the seventh generation and current clan patriarch, Master Duncan Leung, and other masters of the eighth generation.

He is the author of KUNG FU WING CHUN, top seller in Brazil, Portugal and Spain by Editora Escala, in addition to writing regularly on the Internet about the subject. It was a pioneer for being the first master with training authenticates to criticize openly in the media and in his first book the jingoism of the fight. Also criticized the messianic figure of the master disposal of practitioners, quackery and the purchase and sale of certificates and international titles, defending the professional technical evolution and inviting people to rethink this martial art leaving the next pitch to coldly analyze the technical and its original goals.

Keeps your Mo Koon (martial gym) in the third largest city, Salvador, giving regular and private tutoring, and train world-class instructors by the Association Applied Wing Chun Brazil, which is one of its founding members along with his brothers kung fu, Masters Marcelo Florentino, Claudio Alberto Rangel and França.Nesta interview, sifu Marcos speaks outspoken about his vision of the martial art in Brazil today and will not escape controversial issues, always punctuating his answers with full realism and sincerity rarely seen we'd today ..

Blog Dido - In your view, what is the biggest difference between the wing chun practiced in Brazil today, to the wing chun it was practiced in Brazil 10.15 years ago? What were the main changes and because of your changes?

Sifu  Marcos - Before there was not a notion of "Family Wing Chun," that is, the social, ethical and philosophical questions that come along to training, people really wanted was to learn the technique of Jeet Kune Do because of figure of Bruce Lee and his films, and failing that Wing Chun was the most viable option. Brazil had some Chinese and a few Brazilians who had trained certain system content and transmitted to a few interested, closed form, usually very expensive and the student had no guarantee that what we learned had any source, because at that time no had internet, then the possibility to check information was limited. Master Marco Natali, great writer and martial arts pioneer in spreading the struggle in Brazil, for example, never completed the system, a fact admitted by himself in an interview on Orkut Wing Chun Kung Fu community.
Already in this period the last 15 years that they speaks, some Brazilians were already making exchanges abroad aimed at technical improvements or simply bring a more traditional Wing Chun, that is actively participating in an organization or family. This is because with the internet people started to have more access to information about schools and what was in the international panorama of art. Other masters landed here, guests or not by Brazilian and started their work. It started to evolve, although each organization has different goals and working methods of each other when not mixed but I think this positive variety, it gives more options to the interested public. The problem is that professionals often sell more a fantasy that the technique along with the art: sometimes Chinese culture, sometimes historical fantasies about super skilled monks, or worst of all, the perfect self defense that solves everything. This can put individuals and psychologically unprepared technique in imminent danger and this is simply an irresponsible prank. I've seen it, a kind of prosetista and vainglorious speech, in some schools. I heard a true absurd Academy Krav Maga other day, and I've know many good people in this martial art, which looks a lot like the Wing Chun which is earliest. If you think that there are too many teachers being trained in teaching "self-defense" but that probably do not exist two dozen Wing Chun masters in Brazil, I begin to get worried ...

Blog Dido - SiFu, You released a book (Kung Fu Wing Chun) quite successful in the national martial community and now is already writing the next book. What is the biggest difficulties in production and research process that this is one of the boldest projects for the Wing Chun What Mr. considers most important motivation factor in the decision to write about wing chun?

Assim, o escritor José Augusto Maciel Torres convidou-me a escrever o texto.

SM - If I had to write at the time of Marco Natali I would have to buy imported material, to find an authentic practitioner who was in the country or travel abroad for information. With the internet can, just when I give this interview, check any information about any branch available on the network system. Amazingly I had no trouble on information, because besides the internet I had my own baggage of 10 years as a private student of a teacher who genuinely belongs to the Wing Chun family, so I have information that most people are unaware. The difficulty was just writing for the lay public. I had in my hands a chance to change that advertise "best kung fu style", "more so over that." It burned and burned us through martial.
I fell kind of parachute in that project. The book project was stalled by difficulties of Sifu Alberto Gomes França in sending the material time for closing the same as it was only sent of the photos, and they only addressed the Sil Lin Tao (first phase of the fight). Thus, the writer José Augusto Maciel Torres invited me to write the text. I was reluctant enough, because I always wanted to do something more copyright because I have a Wing Chun that was different from that spreads today. Augusto is a friend of Natali and I, although Natali fan as a writer do not agree with his Wing Chun vision and have already criticized the Internet, although not disrespect him. But José Augusto came with a very strong argument: "We will have 120,000 copies in three countries. Despite being one of the main students of Li Hon Ki, you are a stranger and worse illustrious, lies in the northeast, and you know that people are prejudiced. Do you want to start making the history of Wing Chun in the country or want to leave that to someone else? Do you think there is royalty in Wing Chun? All these guys are a son of a b ... "he said. Not much freshness, says what he thinks, I am also so then wrote the text and made half the shots with my own students. But we do not appear in them. I do not like taking pictures.
The motivation I have is knowing that I had and have a chance to really show people what is Wing Chun, how it works, leaving behind that speech about a fight that solves everything in seconds. My next project will be fully authorial and that makes me very excited. I will explore totally unknown aspects of Wing Chun in Brazil and make others more accessible those already practicing.

Blog Dido - Mr. no worries that bad people to buy their books have come out self-titling masters of Wing Chun and start to use the Chinese martial art name for their own benefit, something that Mr. well known in Brazil is almost a "tradition" have picks in all states and capitals?

SM -. No. The internet has been more used it. Book does not teach anyone to fight. The book's function is to make the guy you are or not with it, using it for honest information to give data to the reader to make his judgment in the best possible way. Picks today believe it or buy certificates sold by overseas institutions in theory above suspicion. The guy spends ten years training sucks, hearing things like "this hit kills", etc. and when she needs to use the art is you should. Fortunately every time my students had to use Wing Chun for defense, got a call from them thanking me for the lessons. That's what makes me proud of what I do. But Wing Chun is not only that, because you can spend a lifetime without having to use art. So, my students and alumni, some brothers of art that studied with Li Hon Ki, all part of my life and I of them, and in the end this is the only thing we take, the friendships we make, our fraternal bonds.

O segundo aspecto é a força.

Blog Dido - A very controversial issue concerns the lack of fighters wing chun in championships as cfu or mma. Mr.. attributes this "missing" for what? It would really need to be some representative of Wing Chun, whether national or international tournaments of this type?

SM - is only controversial because people do not know the art and how it works. If they did, this would not be a major concern. Originally the Wing Chun is a struggle to counterattack. The guy sits there with a guard who is almost a Buddhist monk in prayer and when it reacts scathingly attacked. It is very similar to what we call today - not much like the term - self-defense. Then, the punch, the blows, everything is geared toward a different kind of combat environment of competition where the fight is a show aggression he needed two guys going up each other. The unrestricted combat environment, it uses the same defense Wing Chun to disarm a club face, to defend a cross punch or a kick. The movements are ambivalent and are adjusted according to the heat of the moment. This makes it difficult for a level of expertise to a competition of specific struggles to ring at a high level.
When I was in China, I went through a training which aimed to adapt to the wrestling ring. Sigung Duncan Leung (Li Hon Ki master) does this since the seventies. Today, many fighters of our school enter the competitions, but they do pretty much on their own, because everyone is convinced that Wing Chun is for what they call in English "real fights" and I had the good fortune to meet experts people this kind of fight, as the Duncan, and two of his leading disciples, Stephen Faukner and Josh Shawn. They do not make excuses scams, rules and this and that to not fight, they have ventured in competitions to know what goes into the professional fight scene. Sooner or later perhaps a school can produce a high-level fighter for this kind of fight, but following the unique feature of Wing Chun, very difficult.
Making a comparison with what I saw in China, if adapt to more professionally competition, the MMA would be a better environment than a K1 or other competition of its kind. The Wing Chun is strong in low kicks and punches short as elbows and knees, but contrary to what is done in other schools, the Wing Chun fighter must avoid striking free, but the guys think that Wing Chun is just Chain Punch (Punch Current). If the Wing Chun our school was mixed with a good projection struggle as Judo and some ground it would be more efficient fighters.

Blog Dido - What are the aspects of greatest relevance in school of Si Fu  Duncan Leung?

SM - There is only one coming from Wing Chun Yip Man then i do not like to talk about the characteristics of our school as something "better" than any other. So is the way we do, and that's just Wing Chun. Then I will focus on things that I think are different from other schools. The first aspect is the notion of "cover" instead of "block". In Wing Chun generally you expect the blow coming and then stop it. It does not work. And that's why most of the classic defense of the Shaolin Wushu own do not work the way you train. Duncan teaches that when you felt the attack to take place you should cover the area with the defense and enter its strong counter-attack before the attack occurs. It makes a huge difference in the time to put into practice the traditional defenses.
The second aspect is the strength. Our school bases divide the weight evenly between your legs and use the concept of "forces in opposite directions" to increase the force of the blows, or leverage the strength of our defense, because we are going to fight taller people, strong and fast that us, the wing chun presupposes that there is some sort of advantage from the opponent. Lay in martial arts think you should back off arms and legs to spear them harder, which really is true, but it telegraphs the coup. In Wing Chun, if we want a strong blow pull the arm or leg behind quickly and spin the body. This creates short, explosive force. Generally it is said that the Wing Chun uses if not force, but this is not true, Yip Man never said that. Combined with the use of defensive angles that put members of the opponent always in contact with the ends of your body (knees, elbows), the opponent will be hurt us both in defense and in attack. So our school is also called the "Way of first contact."
The last thing I can mention is the combined use of kicks and punches in our strategy for the fight. No one will ever use the Wing Chun fully if we do this in combination. Therefore, according to the style of tradition, equivalent to using the snake behavior; if you strike the head, it gives you with his tail, and if you do it in the tail, she strikes you with his head. People think that because of Wing Chun is a coming fight in southern China prioritizes only the arms. This is not true. The Wing Chun has a greater number of attacks with the legs arms, but few teachers have had access to this aspect of training because Yip Man hated teaches it, which usually was four years after the student complete the whole system. But the great merit of Duncan however is to the traditional scams operate in the fight, something that 99% of schools do not.

Blog Dido - In 2009 Mr. along with other teachers went to China for a "course" where he trained directly with the sifu Duncan Leung. Can you tell us some striking passage of this stay in China and coexistence with this great master?

SM - We were lucky to get the first China that our colleagues from Europe and USA, so we had a chance to talk him many times before training begins. We soon realized the vitality of him, which at that time was already 68 years old. It is polished in formal treatment, but firm and sarcastic. Has not mince words. Outspoken about what he thought of Yip Man, his teacher, and Bruce Lee, his youth struggles partner. When we express the desire to go to the tomb of Yip Man he said: "I've never been there. Died, he died. "But he understood when we explained that Yip Man was for us more than one person, but an icon, then he respected it sent us there with one of his closest friends. In one of our Guangzhou car trips to Foshan, I was on the board when a giant transport truck almost crushed us. We all disoriented after braking, the car spun and continuous act, Duncan spends his arm around my face wielding a flashlight attack. He played a very strong light on the truck driver's face, he raised his arms as if to say "do not shoot". Duncan then began to curse the guy ... in English!
He saw us in training while working at a large table, serious and focused, his head bowed. It seemed he was oblivious to everything. But suddenly got up and walked around the room pointing one by one, our defects against Muay Thai fighters hired to help in attacking realistically. During lunch, we had trained three straight hours we were hungry. There was not hardly anything on the table. So all went to take a nap, and after everyone was asleep, he got up, and went quietly to his plate. This was something that impressed me a lot. Finally, before we left, it was our home and explained the whole theory of Wing Chun, calmly, letting us write everything down. What more can I say? The guy is not only a teacher who paid money to X until you reach the black belt, he really put his neck in danger deadly fights to be certain that the technique works for a long time. It is great as a Oyama, one Hélio Gracie, among other big bold faces from the past, but he says he is not "anyone". So train under him and live with him was one of the greatest honors I've had in my life.

Blog Dido - Why did you chose the wing chun?

SM - I had no natural talent for judo or karate, my first two martial arts. I was afraid of the strongest boys during the fighting in karate especially (now regret having abandoned). Whenever he tried to use the locks I was with my arms scratched and bleeding. I then started reading about Bruce Lee and one day I decided I would learn Jeet Kune Do and Wing Chun. You excited about the speech, like everyone else, so I walked into that of wanting to turn ninja, the easy way, which was what the Wing Chun promised (laughs). I spent half my life trying to understand this martial art, going over the lies to find my true with art, which just did recently. It was a long journey to get where I am, I paid a great price, personal and professional, but I do not regret anything.

Blog Dido - The Wing Chun is different from other styles of martial arts, among other things, to have enough subjective and particular concepts. But if any practitioner of Wing Chun wanted to train other fighting style, which would be required for this will not "put his foot in it" and get lost in the midst of so much information?

SM - I beyond. I say, in so many words that just because the Wing Chun is a style that works differently than the practitioner is required to practice other styles, at least to know how they work in the fight, and let your more realistic training. In Wing Chun, nothing is preset, you should shape what comes to you. The humiliation that fighters of Wing Chun go in sports fights come simply from the fact they go for them without knowing what they are dealing with. If you only defends the punch of Wing Chun fighter -which you will only find out there is run into a fighter Aikido or Krav Maga's face it, also defensive struggles - as you will turn against a boxer who comes jabeando maliciously? Or against a ground fighter? Just do not try to mix the Wing Chun with something else without first understand it in depth. It will not work. If practice boxing, think like a boxer to understand that, and vice versa.

Blog Dido - I would like to thank you for the honor to interview you and wish Mr. leave a final message for the readers as well as your contacts to whom you want to know better and to deepen their wing chun.

SM - The message I leave is the conclusion shooting all these years of training: If you really want something to your life, and are willing to pay the price for it, deal, because everything will collaborate so that you can get where you want. People may speak ill of you or do not respect you, but no one takes the knowledge of you, that will be his for eternity. And you become the result of their commitment, you build as a human being and martial artist. But if you do not risk, not going anywhere. So for those who want to train Wing Chun and think you do not have physical or special skills, I say, this martial art is for you if you are willing to risk in training, because we follow a technique. You will gain defense capability, with it will come the confidence and self-esteem will improve. But if you want a martial art just to talk about martial arts history (not that this also is not legal) and philosophize about being a warrior, your place is with us. In one of the conversations that Duncan had with their fighters after the sparring, he said: "The day I see that fear can not beat them, there will be limits to you." I agree with him.
