Usually I do not like to comment on videos from other families in the large clan which is the Wing Chun (Ving Tsun), referring as a whole. Because I believe that there is no single method that is actually the epitome of the system. I do believe that there are students of Yip Man who are still alive, those who focus on the system at a certain point and they are good enough to transmit it - their understanding of art - competently. So, discuss differences between families, whether they are right or wrong, does not make much difference ...

The case is that some people possibly ask me to evaluate footage and interestingly the last week I was asked to give an opinion on a video of a guy here in my little land. I honestly do not give a damn ... If it's a friendly person, I say how much the person is cool or how we talk or not, without giving further technical explanations. If  the guy on the video is not my friend or i do not know, I prefer to speak absolutely nothing, not enter the case if the guy can be good or not. For me, it does not change anything at all and in fact, do not judge me able to observe and critique technical errors - other than my own

Moreover, I am learning a very important thing; The Mo Lam (and even beyond), anything - absolutely anything - a practitioner can do or say, will have serious consequences that often are not even perceived, or that may not directly affect you, but will affect other people. Also I will do not give names on this case,  by a simple matter of ethics ..
However, this time I think that abound, videos of Wing Chun system demonstrations can stroll between the actual, real and a bad joke and ridiculous. Yes, unfortunately, the latter are most ...

How often you dear reader, watched a video on youtube any, showing a '' Real Fight '' with a practitioner of Wing Chun and the face of Wing Chun loses the fight - or even win, but anything convincingly - and below is a flurry of comments like; - '' This is not the real wing chun! '', '' This is not the authentic Wing Chun !! '', or, 'This wing chun is modified ...' 'and blah blah blah .. ..This is a fairly common phenomenon ... is the kind of argument used mainly by those who try to make your wing chun stands out, either commercially, technically, etc, etc ...

Para podermos ter um norte, é necessário estabelecermos alguns pontos importantes;

The point is that - apart from the fact that these guys always overvalue their styles without even being aware of how the other martial arts works, because we really believe that their style is the '' last cookie package '' and excluding YipMan, they think taht they are ''fighting gods'' - without training that is facing the reality, for 'the real thing' ', no - I repeat - NO fighting style will be effective. It's that simple! But there comes a question; What is the reality, in terms of combat?

In order to have a north, it is necessary to establish some important points;

1) While martial art, we can distinguish the Chinese martial arts in two very basic ways; demonstrative arts and applied arts.

a) - demonstrative Arts may be those whose elaborate movements difficult to perform attract the audience for his show and plasticity. The training is very, very hard, however, their original techniques have little or no applicability in situations where an opponent will attack with full force, full speed and with non-classical attacks. The school usually brags about his marvelous deeds and has wide range of commercial power and conviction.

b) - Since the applied arts is its inverse; They are martial arts that does not have much - if any - plastic beauty, with equally difficult training, but their movements are highly strategic applicability in combat. Its principles and concepts are meant to fight, not for entertainment. A school of applied art that deals with what is' real fight '' in fact, never use it as marketing banner ... that because the person who practices it, its teachers and students are fully self-sufficient in terms of safety technique and need not boast of anything. Silent work!

2) While some advocate the idea that the real fight is the one where your life really is under imminent threat and rare are the times when a person finds himself in a kind of situation like this - working their coping techniques under the 'symbolic action' '(a term that very misunderstood and used pejoratively as' pretend to fight, '' by some people who do not quite understand the real meaning of the term) at the other end we have other teachers, instructors and / or teachers who say - the proper proportions - a fight in a competitive environment as the UFC, K1 and the like, can get too close to something more '' realistic '', as the brutality and the way the fight goes on - with few safety rules for the competitors - is similar to what would be a real confrontation ... training this case has nothing to do with the discussion.

Perhaps the most sensible is not lean toward either extreme. The case is that it has been proven by many examples in practice that a sports training can not be fully effective when placed in a real attack situation. A real example was the death of a fighter of mixed fights, shot down with a hell of a whack on the head of an aggressor that he did not notice the approach when facing a group of people with your partner (see here the matter;http://g1.globo.com/sc/santa-catarina/noticia/2013/07/lutadores-de-mma-se-envolvem-em-briga-em-posto-de-gasolina-veja-video.html) ... And training for an uncontrolled environment (if, in this case in particular, there could be one), you may need to be adapted to function properly in a competitive environment. Those who followed the interview with my Sibaakgung Larry Saccoia, may have a idea what he tells you about it ... and I agree with him completely!

The case is a coping situation in uncontrolled environment has large variations. Not all gives to put on paper or give to simulate. Elements such as the local culture, the historical moment, the predominance of forms of combat that are practiced and more ''N'' conditions is going to say what is the reality for that environment to that state, country, etc, etc ...

In this case, fully agree with what SiFu always speaks; - '' A really efficient martial art bases its strategy to anticipate, avoid confrontation and to have a preventive attitude If you have to react A risk situation, presupposes that his martial art and its position as a strategist already failed! ''

We learned this the hard way with the death, a few years ago, my Si-Hing Eduardo ... But when it comes to practice martial arts, what I mean - briefly - it is; How one fight in Spain is completely different from the way someone struggle in China, Brazil or Zimbabwe ... and so on.

What amazes me most is that many former practitioners of the art do not realize it and often when they train with a teacher come from outside, it has a great experience in struggle and everything else, even if they learn really interesting techniques, do not end taking this into consideration and believe that the epitome of divine technique is centralized. And what happens is that in a fight, whatever the subject passes embarrassment and turns joke ... and think that some even fight!

And it gives me a strange feeling to see that many people think that Wing Chun is' cat fight '' ... as a friend spoke pejoratively practicing Hapkido in a post on a social network ... Obviously, as I do not joke with art from anyone, I am extremely offended when they make jokes of mine ... but the fact is that the joke often makes sense!

Acho que já até mencionei aqui uma frase bastante usual em nossa escola sede em salvador que utilizamos justamente pra abordar esse assunto - ''Na prática, a teoria é outra parceiro!'' E é isso ai mesmo!Mas, mesmo assim, de toda a sorte, eu lhe faço uma pergunta amigo leitor;

The real thing in martial art is; You can learn a curriculum from A to Z of any martial art it is, but without experience against someone really willing will '' take your head off '' - as they say in popular jargon - that is, someone who will get hit (! !!) you will not get far ...
And since you always try to fight in environments that allow a body will face body, professional manner and to allow the full use of his ability as a fighter and strategist, invariably you end up learning some lessons that will not always be in school. And until you get will get away - if lucky - a real risk, you invariably, you will think thoww times about their concepts ...You have to make your art work within the conditions in which he lives and not within the conditions that others think can serve.

I think I've to mention here a very usual phrase in our school based in Salvador,  who just used to address this issue - ''! Man, In practice, the theory is another! '' And that right there But even so, all luck, I ask you a question dear reader;

What kind of Wing Chun you train?

I question it not for you that are probably reading these ordinary lines and is already practicing a serious school. But the mountains of boys and young men who will arrive by chance this site and are practicing or on their own, or youtube videos, or even alone .... Yes, there are still people who prefer this way ...

Not to mention those who believe that being formed or advanced in any other styles, whatever they may be - such as Northern Shaolin, grab Water, Drunken Bonxing ... or whatever it is - can have understanding of what Wing Chun is not never had a formal lesson on the subject.

With the new franchise about Yip Man - the continuation, in this case - with Donnie Yen once again it is likely that the phenomenon of appearing a new Wing Chun master will each corner can happen again ... and there in these conditions even Michael Jackson if a hipotetic way,was alive, it would be a practitioner of Wing Chun ...

(Isso seria um Yee Jii Kim Yeung Mah preparando para um Moonwalker???)
(That would be a Yee Ji Kim Yeung Mah preparing for a Moonwalker ???)

As Sitaaigung Duncan Leung often already said ... No matter who learned from whom, in fact. Whether you can take down an opponent with his Wing Chun.
Only to knock his opponent it takes a lot more than we do believe enough to do it. No matter how talented or how strong someone appears to be. Apply Wing Chun in fact, it will always demand more from you. Will require minimal understanding of how to properly train. To know the when, the how, the where, the '' why do '' and especially the '' why NOT do ', technical and art in sí ... and that you can only learn from a case can competent teacher ... it will also require you to take a chance and go try to find out if a technique is really effective for you or not ....

A sparring at your school - with some kung fu brother - it can even be hard, violent ... the effect of K.O. can be frustrating, difficult ... with physical and emotional distress, but still, BE VERY FAR from what the martial art meant in the past, or that a risk eminent require .... maybe it will be close YOUR reality or not ... you feel that way? How would you react to that?

SiFu  always tells me between one chat and another that; - '' Martial arts are nothing but answers to certain problems in the fight, to influence social, historical and cultural center of its region of origin. Study it and you will be able to understand any martial art ... ''

But do you want some advice? Forget the mainstream around the wing chun, my friend! Forget the blah blah blah mystic behind all the nonsense about philosophy, chi, secret curriculum and everything else ... forget the nonsense of secret technique, the biggest crap; to train with the intergalactic badass Master seminars that cost the guy in the eye to tell you a couple of stories and you get out of there with a paper in his hands thinking that is Chinese .... Forget all that! NOTHING, absolutely nothing will ensure that what you are learning is actually martial art!

Learning culture is cool and very very important, the thinking behind the move and everything, the historical roots but the reality of what combat is quite another ..... the truth is neither in these ordinary lines of this blog ... Want to know what is actually martial art? Go fight someone and find out for yourself! Look for the root ... while you continue to emulate combat experiences of a third - is your SiFu his Sihing his Sidai ... or anyone else, you will not get the essence of what the martial art is proposed. Perhaps, in this process, it would be relevant even readjust to the question; - 'For what you train martial arts?'

Nova Coluna no Blog do Dido ; ''Fala SiFu'' : Bai Si

                                           Today on Dido's Blog; ''SiFu Says''

One of the coolest things in the way of those who practice any martial art - in addition to the fights, competitions and stuff like that, of course - is the ability to cultivate friendships and strengthen contacts with people you never dreamed of knowing.
Yes, my Si Fu always tells me that the most important thing in this whole process is just the people who pass through our lives and we exchange experience with them - how much we can learn and teach and at the end, grow together - because it demands a good Kung fu. Obviously you get to know people who are quite inconvenient, who cherish the policy and are in the middle just to generate money the dirtiest way possible etc, etc ... but it is also part of the process as a whole ...

E uma dessas pessoas, entre tantos e tantos nomes e pessoas as quais se tornaram amigos pessoais com o passado do tempo é este senhor da foto abaixo;

And with me - I am a novice in Wing Chun - I never thought that one day would contact and have not only friendship but the respect of some of the most important names of Wing Chun in Brazil and outside Brazil. Without ''wanting to travel a lot'' in this vibe, but I believe that this modest blog has become a natural vehicle for this and despite all the Non-professionalism, people have really enjoyed the content. All I can say is; Thank you.

And one of these people, among many, many names and people which have become personal friends with the passage of time is this gentleman photo below;

E foi justamente ele que me enviou um texto via facebook e, após pedir sua autorização, publico aqui como a postagem de estréia da nova coluna do Blog do Dido ;

'' SiFu Says''!!

Tudo fica a critério do autor.

SiFu Victor is a very caring person and a man with a great heart. He lives in Puerto Rico, and oddly enough, he often calls on cellphone to me,just to talk about Wing Chun. Although my English is very bad - and in this he shows a great deal of patience with me, also training my conversation and teaching me more of the language, I think. he can not see - always gives me great tips. Make no mistake, dear reader, despite the peaceful face, the technique of SiFu Victor is extremely powerfull!
And it was he who sent me a text via Facebook and, after asking your permission, publish here as the debut post of the new column of Dido Blog; 'SiFu Says'' !!
The new column ''  SiFu Says '' it is a space for any SiFu of any lineage, can write about anything what he or she wants. Anything related to the Wing Chun in particular. It can be written or video article. Everything is to the author. And in this inaugural article, SiFu Victor discusses the inherent responsibilities disciple after Bai Si - the ceremony of discipleship .... I hope you enjoy it as I enjoyed ...
                                                                 Bai Si - Arte do Discípulo

By SiFu Victor Colo Nevez

A Cerimónia Tradicional

O candidato, então, inclina sua cabeça e declara;
 -  "Meu nome é ..., O nome do meu pai é .. ..,  venho de .. ..

O sifu levaria o chá e não beberia no momento. O candidato, então, inclina-se 3 vezes (Kau Tau) e faz a sua promessa juramentada. A promessa é um compromisso pessoal entre o aluno e o professor e é uma coisa individual. Os 3 arcos deve conter um compromisso com o sifu, o estilo e as tradições ou escola de kung fu. Abaixo estão alguns exemplos;

(Cerimônia do Bai Si no Ip Man Tong - Foshan)

Você come, dorme, pensa age como o estilo.

Bai Si – Art of the Disciple
The accepting of a “special student/disciple” in traditional kung fu was a very big deal. You not only represented the sifu but also the particular style. Thus, there was a great deal of responsibility placed on the individual. If you lost a fight, got yourself in an embarrassing situation, associated with the wrong people, dishonored the system or your sifu’s wishes, you dishonored the sifu, the style, your kung fu family and yourself. You were the walking Image of the sifu, the style, and the school We call It “guilty by association” here in the West. As you can see, a lot was riding on this and was not taken lightly. You were the son(daughter) of the sifu and the system.

If you were accepted as a disciple, you were basically closer then the sifu’s son/daughter and family member in many respects. There would be no holding back of Information, special attention was given, the sifu would take great pains to see that you got the Information, then see If you understood it and could put it to use. Any of the styles so called “secrets”-herbal medicine, dim mak, forms, hit points or kung fu techniques were revealed. The sifu was always available to the disciple, and the disciple would In essence be able to call upon the sifu at anytime with a question or problem, not always necessarily about training Kung Fu. You would accompany the sifu on all kung fu related matters, or go in the sifu’s place, if the sifu was unable to attend. There was never a question of whether you had to or wanted to go-sifu said go, you go!

Today’s excuses of work, sickness, family and other obligations-although very real- didn’t even become subject for discussion. It also meant that the sifu was stricter with you in your training, you worked harder then your brothers and sisters, were responsible for all the younger brother and sisters training, opening and closing the school, as well handling all school matters on your own or at the request of the sifu, including the cleaning, repair and promotion of the school. At all public functions, the disciples were responsible for the needs of the sifu's food, refreshments, money handling, etc. Remember-it was a privilege to be a disciple-one not given out easily. This private club was very hard to get Into, and all to easy to be kicked out of, If you messed up. You were always on probation. But, what you were getting out of it more then made up for it. Essentially, the sifu was molding your martial and moral character, as well as your technique-al skill. Knowledge was handed out to only the special few, and since it was not a tangible item-whomever got it was either very worthy, worked hard for it and/or was very lucky.

There were only two ways to become a disciple-you were chosen or you requested to be sponsored by a fellow student who was already a disciple. If the sifu saw that you were a worthy student, the sifu would send a disciple over and let the student know that they were being considered to become “part of the family”. No one said no, they weren’t Interested. The sifu had shown interest that this was a person that they wanted to share all their knowledge and skill with, to take special interest in. It would behoove you to remember the time period. First of all, getting “into’ a Kung Fu school was not that easy. Money was not always a criterion for admittance. If you did get In, any real knowledge was not readily forth coming. Now look at the disciple ceremony-in general this is why you came to the school for the style, but more importantly-the sifu. The sifu and the style were on the same level, sometimes the sifu was higher. Here was the person that would teach you, look after you, nurture and protect you, correct you, guide you and mold you. The sifu was the living embodiment of the style and the sifu was the one who was going to turn you into the same thing. I think you can begin to see the bigness of this whole thing.

The other way to become a disciple was to have an existing disciple go to the sifu on the student’s behalf, letting the sifu know that they wanted to become a disciple. The sifu at this point would either say yes, or would watch the student from that point on to see If you were worthy, could be trusted or was just trying to buy the sifu’s kung fu and “secrets”. The sifu very rarely came out and said no outright The sifu was the person who had final say on who would be allowed in the school in the first place-if the sifu didn’t like you from the beginning, the sifu wouldn’t let you in the school, let alone teach you anything. (Unlike today, where a check, cash or credit card gets you In the door and basically everything you want.)

The Traditional Ceremony

The candidate was Instructed on the proper procedure by an existing disciple or sponsor. Every school has its own rituals and procedures but below Is the most common.

The whole school was usually present-the ceremony, and hopeful acceptance was cause for a big celebration. If the student was made a disciple, after the ceremony the new disciple would take everyone present out for a feast.
The sponsor disciple or senior disciple would be standing on the left of the sifu, who would be seated. The candidate would be standing in front of the sifu.
The senior disciple would pour a cup of tea and hand it to the candidate. The candidate would then either hand it to the sifu and get on their knees OR taking the tea, gets on their hands and knees, and holds it in front of the sifu.
The candidate would then bow their head and state-” My name is.. .,my father’s name is.. ..,l come from.. ..(place of birth) I am humbly requesting the honor and privilege of becoming a special/private/indoor student or disciple of sifu. . .(sifu’s name) The candidate then raises up and offers the tea to the sifu.
The sifu would take the tea and not drink it. The candidate would then bow 3 times (kowtow) and make his sworn pledge. The pledge is a personal commitment between the student and teacher and is an individual thing. The 3 bows must contain a commitment to the sifu, the style and traditions or school of kung fu. Below are some examples
Sifu- “I pledge/swear/promise to have no other sifu, and do everything In my power to make my sifu proud of me.”" I pledge to take no other as my sifu, and will belong to no other family, from now until my death.” “I pledge to honor my sifu, to follow and obey him (her) without question.”- The main idea is the commitment of the student to the individual
Style- “I pledge/swear/promise to keep, develop and protect the name of (school and/or style).” “I pledge to bring honor to both my style and my sifu. I will do nothing to bring shame to the name of (style).”-The main idea is that you and the style are now Inseparable. You are no longer a kung fu student, you are a (style) practitioner with a family and represent both family and style.
School/Tradition- “I pledge/swear/promise to preserve and protect the teachings of(school).” “I pledge continue to grow as a person within the art of(style) as taught to me by sifu(name) of the (school name).” “I pledge to continue and uphold the traditions and teachings of (school name) as my own. “-the main idea is to bind yourself with the school, It’s traditions, and the traditions of the style and schools ancestors.

The candidate could bow and recite each one, (3 bows and recital’s total), then bow their head or stay bowed, recite all three and bow three times or just stay bowed and recite all three.
After listening to the candidate’s pledges, the sifu would then drink the tea (if accepted).—Most schools now a days end here, the candidate would then give the sifu a hung bao, (red envelope with money) and the sifu would help the new disciple up, signifying the new sifu/disciple relationship.
After the sifu drinks the tea, the sifu pours a cup of tea for the student. This tea is usually from a different teapot, and the tea is scalding hot. The student must take and drink the tea without hesitancy, discomfort or pain. This signifies to the sifu the candidate’s willingness to endure great hardships, whatever the sifu gives out.

After drinking the tea in one gulp, the student hands the teacup to the senior disciple, and then hands the sifu a hung bao containing a prescribed some of money. This money ranges greatly from individual to individual-anywhere from $500 to $3,000(or more).The money-traditionally- was given in like bills. If it was $2,000 for example. two 1,000 dollar bills to signify the multiplying of money and good fortune/prosperity. 14(00) or 4000 was not used since the 4 in Cantonese -(say)-sounds like the word, die or death-bad luck I All the odd numbers are yang numbers-good luck numbers In general.
The sifu would take the hung bao and then help the new disciple up. The sifu would the say, “From this day forward you a part of my family and will be called… (kung fu family name given by the sifu) The disciple now has all the rights and privileges of a family member, and thus the training truly begins. At this point a formal picture was taken with the sifu seated and the disciple standing on the sifu’s LEFT hand side. A picture taken with the disciple on the RIGHT meant that the student had learned everything and was ready to go out on their own and teach. A graduation picture of sorts.
Bai Si in Today’s World
Being a kung fu disciple In today’s world ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. In many schools it has turned into a way for the sifu to make money off of sincere students, promote idol worship, slave labor/ego boosting and separation from the kung fu brothers and sisters.
However, some schools today don’t hold much back, but most people are not appreciative of or realize the depth or significance of what they are getting In their school, In comparison to a similar stylel school up the block. And the majority of people really don’t care what style of kung fu they’re doing, “it’s close to the house and I can do it with my kid”, or “I can always go to a different school up the street.” There are more people out there who want to doll earn “something”, then those who are shopping for a (Insert name of specific style/system)school. And thus the sifu’s attitude can become “Get as much from them as I can now.”
People expect to pay big money for a chance to train with a Martial Arts Somebody, let alone become a “special student” of someone famous, if they’re lucky enough. Let me give an example-the general public would pay to train/become a disciple of Jackie Chan, a Martial Arts Somebody. The general public does not know who Dan Inosantos, Peter Urban, or Graciella Cassillas are, therefore they become Martial Arts Nobodies, even though to us they are big time Somebody’s (The general public Is driven to the Martial Arts by the media, not a specific style or style representative. The general public knows that Chuck Norris does karate, the martial arts public knows what style of karate he does.) The martial arts public know and are driven to specific people and or style because we are on the inside looking out, we know what we’re looking for. The martial arts public would expect to pay big money to train with these people, not the The general public. That only happens when the general public becomes the martial arts public and are educated In their schools, go to the seminars, read the books, buy the magazines and watch the videotapes.
But if the martial arts student’s are spending large amounts of money for a Martial Arts Neighborhood Nobody to become a disciple, then they really should be taught something special, not just what is in the curriculum. The disciple now has usually become the sifu’s servant, practice dummy and gopher-all for the privilege of ‘hanging out” with the sifu, under the hopes of getting “some pearl of knowledge” that no one else will get.
As I stated before, in the Sifu’s mind, knowledge is intangible, how or how much do you charge for It.? How long is the person going to be In the school ? Why should I bust my butt to make them get it when they…
Don’t get it,
Aren’t worthy or appreciative of it’s depth and beauty,
Are going to leave when they get bored, run out of money or find something else to do,
Don’t realize that what the sifu is teaching took years of work and understanding to internalize and then teach.
So, “You want it?,You can have It but it will cost you I” And that’s only If the sifu Is sincere. If the sifu is just out to make money off of the students-you ain’t getting Jack In a good kung fu school there should never be anything held back, everyone Is treated the same, taught openly and honestly and the sifu should always put the training and welfare of the students first. The sifu should always treat everyone as a student, friend and a potential “would be” or “could be” disciple-someday. So the question becomes-”Why be a disciple If I’m getting it anyway without all the above fuss? ” What the student gets is good kung fu, taught to you correctly and with the emphasis on you being good at it. The disciple gets an understanding of how to live the art, “when you can no longer tell where your Kung Fu ends and Life begins”, of bonding, fellowship with other disciples, of a commitment to the system, style and school, and to the sifu. In some schools it is a personal thing, you do it for your own reasons.
The sifu has now taken on a son or daughter, and must do everything In the sifu’s power to be there for them, guide them, mold them and set a good martial and moral example for them. The sifu is their Martial Arts father and Kung Fu role model.(If we can play with a famous saying and altar it a bit-With great responsibility, comes the potential for great power.)
Those of you who are students contemplating becoming a disciple sooner or later, or have been approached or “chosen”, remember that it is a commitment to the style, as well as the school and the sifu. But it is also a commitment to yourself. When you choose to become a full time student of the art (not just something you do a couple of nights a work when you have nothing else to do), your kung fu and your mindset change. You eat It, breath It, think It’ sleep It, poop it. Becoming a disciple is(in my opinion)the last great step in a kung fu person’s development-and it is important to make sure that all those of you who are Interested in it, have the knowledge, Information and education for the opportunity and experience to do it, complete it and live it.
