Muk Yan Jong desmistificado...

Muk Yan Jong demystified ...

Recently I was presented with a Muk Yan Jong (pillar of wooden man) by my personal friend, student and training partner, already cited here on the Blog, Augusto Pereira. And skeptical as I am, if I believe it, I would say that because of the law of attraction, was bombarded in recent months with videos, texts and questions about this tool that is almost a fetish of 9 out of 10 kung fu practitioners, be it what style is. So, I thought it would be a good opportunity to write about this subject here on the blog and again, open the discussion on the subject.

First of all, I would like to clarify that the dear reader, formally, I'm not at this stage of the Wing Chun training. Therefore, all content of this post is based on logical and simplistic observations. As I covered this in forums giving my opinion on this matter and will have been till accused of 'not understanding anything about Chinese kung fu' 'I tried the most generalize without taking into account the very different interpretations of lines to lines, because at first, can cause some strangeness by the lay public. However, I try to make it clear that some points are basic knowledge for any serious practitioner. Nevertheless, I believe that my opinion may initiate ace player-practitioner friend of research, and drawing demystify some 'urban legends'' about training with this tool and so I ask the indulgence of trying to explain about the theme for a new perspective.

Uma simples conceitualização...
A simple conceptualization ...

Muk Yan Jong = 木人 桩 - Commonly called Mudjong, Muk Jong or even Woody Dummy, was very popular because of the Bruce Lee movies (although in any of his films he appears in the training Jong) and Jackie Chan. the term is more appropriate to set the device is Muk Yan Jong (Pillar wooden man). The device in itself resembles a man's arms and legs extended, with a rather peculiar provision. Some authors state that the Muk Yan Jong is for kung fu Chinese, as well as punching balls are for boxing, view with which I disagree, since the Muk Yan Jong has completely different purposes than simply a punching bag . This  'Tool for training' is easily found in various styles of Kung Fu Chinese as Hung Kuen, Choy Lee Fut, Bak Siu Lum, among others, and is also found in various formats, sizes and shapes.

In Wing Chun, the Muk Yan Jong part of the fourth domain (Lin Wik)of the system (Hai Tong), the first phase of the upper trilogy training (integrated by arms, long pole, Luk Dim Bun Gwan and double knives, Pa Chan tou) and the Muk Yan Jong  with  the Gerk Jong device, form the domain named Muy Fah Jong (Pillar of plum blossom).

Originally, the Muk Yan Jong had a more archaic shape and was basically stuck in the land, which received the name of '' dead wooden dummy ''. The patriarch Yip Man was very important figure in the device update, to put it provisions on poles, so that they could practice it in urban spaces such as apartments and homes. With this, each stroke placed on wooden dummy provided in these support posts, assessment of impact caused a feeling of 'retaliation', which made this type of wooden dummy received the nickname '' living wooden dummy '' .

Contrary to popular belief, Muk Yan Jong coaching basically requires that the practitioner has previous training. That is, if you do not understand certain system concepts that are training, practicing in the Muk Yan Jong will only serve as an 'futility exercises' and that in no way will help in their training; In another words, it will be a waste of time. Therefore, before entering the training phase with the Muk Yan Jong, the practitioner must pass through the earlier stages, as Siu Lin Tao, Chum Kiu and Biu Gee.

O que eu quero dizer basicamente com isso é que não adianta ficar espancando o boneco de madeira horas á fio se você não entender a lógica por trás da prática. Enquanto isso, poderemos entender alguns mecanismos sobre o Muk Yan Jong se tivermos um olho mais clinico....Vamos observar alguns conceitos teóricos do treinamento;

What I mean by that is that basically no point in beating the woody Dummy for hours  if you do not understand the logic behind the practice. Meanwhile, we can understand some mechanisms Muk Yan Jong on if we have a more clinical eye .... Let's look at some theoretical concepts of training;

Apenas um pedaço de madeira...
Just a piece of wood ...

Making a simple analogy; When you're a kid and is learning to read and write, their only tools are paper and pencil. You will pass some years having contact with the alphabet, the more complex grammatical rules, text interpretation etc, etc ... and will spend a few years writing by hand to practice to have a good command of written and spoken language. Only after a few years, you can take a course in typing (or to people who have achieved, was still called typing course) and use a tablet, or laptop or a typewriter.
But the fact dominate typing techniques, does not mean it will improve your command of the language, much less will make your Portuguese improve (just watch how much people write badly on the Internet around and all of them type in a notebook, or a computer ...). However, your text will be visually more readable and visually improved.

With the Muk Yan Jong is the same. If you do not understand how the most basic techniques work, where they are inserted in the '' rules '' and '' counter-rules '' style, the Muk Yan Jong becomes just a piece of wood. Therefore it is necessary that the practitioner spend a few years training and understanding some truths about the style, having a good command of the techniques, then practice them and improve them with the Muk Yan Jong. But even the Muk Yan Jong, will not give you a '' power '' higher, a divine insight or bring some kind of personal satisfaction, and if you bring will be something lacking in content.
In fact, some guys train in wooden puppet and soon after, leave '' belly full '', thinking that they are training the epitome of effective technique. But since they do not understand the '' how '' and '' why '' of each movement, its application is reduced to zero. And here again, the Muk Yan Jong becomes more useful as hanger. Some erroneous forms of training are commonly observed and some of them are:

Treinar velocidade no Muk Yan Jong...
Train speed on the Muk Yan Jong ...

Who has not watched some video of some kung fu practitioner, '' rolling '' arms in the Muk Yan Jong at the speed of light? Often the guys are so fast that even a bad digital camera can capture blurs the guy's arms. Sounds interesting right?
This is a common feature, but in fact, has absolutely nothing to do with the purpose of the wooden dummy. Do not speed trains in Muk Yan Jong. You can even move quickly, but it will only seem like you are in a hurry to go somewhere else ...

One of the functions of the Muk Yan Jong is to refine the movements of the practitioner. For this, the ideal is to train your moves naturally in a comfortable speed, and the practitioner should feel the docking station, hip, shoulder, elbow, generative force, etc, etc ... once again, we need to the practitioner understands what it means axis and that can keep always will from the shorter distance, including the practice in Jong ...

Treinar calejamento no Muk Yan Jong....
Train callus in Muk Yan Jong ....

For me, it's the dumbest way to train in the Muk Yan Jong! The Muk Yan Jong is not a Makiwara!
When the old masters developed forms but Muk Yan Jong Rustic, the intention was not to train callus or hardening of the members. If so, he probably would not have the shape that it has today .... You can even train callus on Wooden Dummy but this, again, goes against the grain of the original machine's purpose ...

Domínio da forma...
Mastery of form ...

Mastering the Set of Muk Yan Jong is not difficult. The variations in the provisions of the sessions, strain to strain, and volume movements tend to be between 108, 116 and 118 movements, which does not mean that once dominated the way, the practitioner will be able to express them in combat . These variations are numerical references will Chinese cabalistic numbers and do not relate to the quantity of techniques in itself. As in Siu Nim Tao, Chum Kiu and Biu Gee, the forms are just a set of technical elements that when added together will other things, will lead to effective technique. These elements can be studied in single or isolated set, combined and recombined, will extent that the practitioner to continue understanding the logic of each movement.

But mastering the form does not mean much ....

Much of respect ace Muk Yan Jong sequences are pretty obvious, but others will require that a qualified SiFu can show the correct interpretation, or approximately what it means, and this, of course, varies from SiFu to SiFu. This is because in theory, the Muk Yan Jong is stopped and during the way, it's you who moves. But in a fight, the opponent is on the move and will never be static.
Some strains have the same form (or as you prefer, Tao Lu) without the wooden dummy, others train the way starting them in different sequences among other general variations.

Disposições físicas do Muk Yan jong...
Physical provisions of Muk Yan Jong ...

All kung fu practitioners ever wanted to have a Muk Yan Jong and some even are themselves who builds them into his own practice. The construction of the Muk Yan Jong would be a long subject and probably would need another post, but this, let's look generally the physical arrangements of the device in itself.

The Muk Yan Jong is composed of a thicker stem, which simulates the opponent's body, and in fact, resembles a human dummy. In its formation there are three 'arms'' and '' leg '', as shown below (not notice in my drawing, done in ballpoint pen and impromptu).
Like as a person, there are the Muk Yan Jong, a high level, one medium and one low, to give the notion of height of the blows, as shown below ...

In fact, I like to do these drawings plans because it facilitates much time to see some explanation .... but anyway, back to the subject .... The provisions of the areas, make reference to the human body itself levels; high, medium and low. Looking more carefully, notice that there are two arms at a higher level and a lower ...

Mas porque três braços?

But because three arms?

Basically, the two 'arms'' muk yan jong arranged in the (figures) are on a higher level and there is another '' arm '', more will down.
These arms on each side (left and right) will help when in his change of sides and the lower arm, will simulate a lower attack. The problem is that it is you who will move to practice your techniques, not the jong, it is easier to practice with an upper arm on each side and this will cause you will always cover from the shortest distance and how you are also moving, this will cause you to avoid the most low blows, so the need of only one lower arm and two higher.

Mas e a linha central nisso tudo???

But what the center line in all this ???

The center line of the Muk Yan Jong passes exactly through the center pole, just like passing a person, that just as referencial. In case of the reader has lost, I suggest once again, read the post about '' Central Line '' right here to Blog. Of the two upper arms jong actually simulate (for want of a better term) the right arm going to the left with a punch and the left arm going to the right, as in X. Therefore, when it is done the Pak Sao training in Jong, even if the impression you have is to be striking the part of '' inside '' arm, notional smaller distance will always be part of '' out ''. You can even in the absence of a Muk Yan Jong, ask a friend to position your arms in this position and practice good part of how he served as '' Jong '' ...

Mas e a perna? Ela simula um chute, certo?

But what the leg? It simulates a Kick, right?

The Muk Yan Jong's leg is not actually there to simulate any Kick.
The leg is there to help you in your Footwork !!!

Someone noticed that the name Muy Fah jong, which refers to the plum blossom? Why is that?

Why just the footwork, using the leg of Woody Dummy as a reference, you will form a '' design '' of plum blossom. But in reality, you will make contact with a footwork a little more elaborate. Generally, the practitioner should have noticed the Hieung Mah, on Biu Gee form, Saam Kock Mah, seen in some lineages on Siu Nim Tao phase, as well as other ways to use the footwork ...

Algumas linhagens utilizam uma ''metodologia'' para a prática deste nível que inclui alguns elementos;

It is exactly for this reason that the wooden Dummy had another leg, would not be possible to practice the basic changes, the triangular movement and the technical and general.

Some lineages use a 'method' to practice this level includes some elements;

- When adjusting the height of Jong relative to the practitioner. Ideally, the upper arms are always in the height of the solar plexus of those who will use the product, not higher, not lower.

- Always adjust the distance between you and the Muk Yan Jong.

- Do not lay your eyes on the arms or leg jong while practicing. Ideally look always a natural height, or to '' head '' of the doll.

- Da San Jong;  What is a sequence '' free ''. That is, in practice Wooden Dummy without a sequential pattern, the way the practitioner want.

- Wooden dummy form.

- Hong Jong; It would be the practice in the same way the wooden dummy in the air.

In my current lineage (applied wing chun) , there is a '' sub-level '' called '' dismantling the wooden puppet '', which is basically the understanding of the application in action free of the wooden dummy techniques. This was one of the reasons why we created a controversial story involving Bruce Lee and his SiFu, Yip Man ... but this is another story ...

The important thing in all this is to understand that the Muk Yan Jong is just a tool to be used appropriately at the exact moment the practitioner. This does not mean that this, understanding some system concepts, can not practice something with this device. However, it is important to be aware of the level of training that is. '' Skip '' phases is never good deal for the practitioner of Kung Fu and if misused, will best serve as decoration. Remember that this device is only one of the devices of the fourth stage of the wing chun system. The Gerk Jong, will discuss in a future post ....

Bem pessoal é isso.
